The Portland State basketball program has added Wendell Wright for the 2008-09 season after the high school senior has signed a grant-in-aid contract with the Vikings for the coming year.

Wright is a 6-5 guard/forward from Mayfair High School in Lakewood, CA. He had originally signed a national letter of intent with Loyola Marymount last fall, but was released from that agreement following a coaching change.

Wright averaged 11 points, five rebounds and four assists as a junior at Mayfair, earning All-Suburban League honors.
As a senior, Wright averaged eight points per game.

"We are excited about the addition of Wendell, because he is the type of player we want to continue to recruit; an athletic wing, a skilled player who is a good driver to the rim," said Head Coach Ken Bone. "What I also like about him is he is a good passer and a very unselfish passer."

Wright is the fifth player to sign with the Viking program this year. He joins a roster with six returning letterwinners, three returning starters and three returning redshirts.

Portland State is coming off its finest basketball season in school history. The Vikings set a school record with a 23-10 record, winning the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles, and making a first-ever trip to the NCAA Division I Tournament.

The grant-in-aid signing by Wright is non-binding since it has come after the basketball letter of intent signing period.
