Saint Mary's Runs Past PSU, 101-80, Behind Samhan's 31 points

MORAGA, Calif. – Omar Samhan scored 31 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, and Saint Mary's snapped Portland State's four-game winning streak with a 101-80 victory on Tuesday night at McKeon Pavilion.

The 6-foot-11, 265-pound Samhan had his way down low all evening to carry the Gaels to their sixth win in a row. Samhan went 15 of 23 from the field and helped his team outrebound the Vikings, 39-22.

Portland State led just once, on Dominic Waters jumper to open the game. A layup by Waters 5:19 before halftime tied the game at 31-31, but the Gaels scored the next nine points and led 46-37 at the break.

Micky McConnell hit a 3-pointer to start the second half for Saint Mary's to make it 49-37, and the Vikings were never able to get the lead back into single digits. They closed to 79-68 on a layin by Phil Nelson, but the Gaels went on a 14-4 run to effectively seal the win.

Saint Mary's shot lights out over the final 20 minutes, going 25 of 30 from the field (83.3 percent), including 5 of 7 on three-pointers.

The Vikings entered the game one of the nation's hottest shooting teams, especially from beyond the arc. After shooting 47.8 from three-point range over its past six games, Portland State went just 4 of 14 against Saint Mary's.

Waters led the way with 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists. He went 9 of 15 from the floor, while Jamie Jones was 8 of 12 and finished with 16 points.

Saint Mary's (8-1) had six players reach double-digits. McConnell tallied 16 and Clint Steindl added 15, while a trio of players finished with 10 apiece. The Gaels shot 61.8 percent (42 of 68), including 8 of 19 from 3-point range.

Portland State (5-5) next plays against against former coach Ken Bone and Washington State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The game will be played at the Toyota Center in Kennewick, Wash., and will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net.

GAME NOTES: The Vikings committed a season-low eight turnovers ... Waters' seven boards is a new career-high ... Melvin Jones and Julius Thomas both added nine points for PSU ... Samhan is fourth in the nation in rebounding, and entered the game averaging 19.9 ppg and 11.9 ppg while shooting 60 percent from the field ... Saint Mary's was the fifth 20-win team from 2008-09 that the Vikings have faced this year.
