Kennewick, WA - Klay Thompson and Nikola Koprivica ignited the Washington State offense in a 93-69 win over Portland State at the Toyota Center.
Washington State set a school-record from behind the three-point line with an .813 mark on 13-16. Overall, the Cougars shot .635 from the field as they improved to 9-2 on the season, the best record in the Pac-10.
Portland State lost its second in a row to drop to 5-6.
The game featured the Vikings going against their former coach,
Ken Bone, who took over at Washington State this season.
PSU trailed throughout the first half until a
Melvin Jones three-pointer tied the game at 22-22. Then,
Jamie Jones scored on an offensive rebound and the Vikings' led 24-22 with 5:57 to play in the half.
The key to that point for the Vikings was holding Thompson, the Cougars' leading scorer without a point until the 3:32 mark of the first half. Thompson came into the game as the nation's fourth-leading scorer at 25.1 points per game.
But Thompson reeled off eight quick points in a minute and a half to give the Cougars a 35-29 lead.
Washington State's lead grew to 44-33 at halftime. After PSU's brief lead, the Cougars made their last nine field goals compiling a 22-9 run over the last 4:38 of the half.
WSU then hit its first four shots of the second half and the lead grew. Thompson and Koprivica got hot to lead the Cougar attack.
The Cougar tandem combined for 33 of their 46 points in the second half and WSU led by as many as 27 points.
Thompson finished with 23 points. Koprivica also had a career-high 23 points and a did not miss a shot, hitting 6-6 from the field, 5-5 from three-point range and 6-6 at the line.
Dominic Waters led the Vikings with 19 points and four assists.
Phil Nelson had 11 points, while
Jamie Jones and
Julius Thomas scored 10 points each. Jones led the Vikings with seven rebounds.
The Vikings shot .435 from the field, .500 at the line, and made just 8-24 from three-point range (.333).
GAME NOTES: PSU went 0-3 against its three Pac-10 opponents this year. The Vikings have now lost eight in a row to Pac-10 teams... PSU is 0-7 all-time against Washington State...
