The Portland State athletics program released its football schedule for the coming season as the Vikings make major transitions in 2010. The most obvious transition is the new direction under first-year Head Coach Nigel Burton, hired last Dec. 8. The Vikings will have new offensive and defensive systems, and they will employ them in a different venue - Hillsboro Stadium - as Burton leads the Vikings in a bounce-back season from their poorest showing in 27 years (2-9 in 2009 under previous coach Jerry Glanville).

The first National Letter of Intent Signing Day has come for Portland State's first-year Head Football Coach Nigel Burton and he is thrilled with the versatility his group of 20 signees will bring to the Viking football program. The Vikings have added 14 high school recruits and six junior college transfers to a team that has 52 returning letterwinners and 14 returning starters in 2010.

The Portland State football program will host a National Letter of Intent Signing Party on Wednesday, February 3 at Almalfi's Restaurant in Portland. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. with no-host food and drinks. The signing party is open to Portland State boosters and is an opportunity see video and find out about new Viking players who will sign national letters of intent that day. New Head Football Coach Nigel Burton and his entire coaching staff will be on hand to meet boosters and talk about the upcoming season. A silent auction will also take place at the signing party.

Portland State freshman football player Nevin Lewis was honored on Sunday evening for his high school achievements, winning the Johnny Carpenter Prep Athlete of the Year, at the Oregon Sports Awards.

Portland State Head Football Coach Nigel Burton has named Eric Jackson the Vikings' new Defensive Coordinator. Jackson joins the Viking coaching staff after spending the past 10 seasons at Princeton. Jackson, who once recruited Burton out of high school, will now be his defensive coordinator and safeties coach. He brings more than 20 years of coaching experience to Portland State.

The Portland State Football Alumni Group will hold its next meeting on Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m., prior to the Football Signing Party. The meeting will take place at Amalfi's Restaurant, the same location as the Signing Party. All Portland State Football Alumni are welcome to attend and take part.
