Portland, OR - Freshman Brady Garner's first-period pin of Kyle Temple highlighted the Portland State Vikings' home-opening wrestling match at the Peter W. Stott Center. Southern Oregon won the match 33-12.
Freshman Brady Garner, competing in his first dual meet for the Vikings at 157 pounds, pinned Kyle Temple at 2:39 of the match. The victory was Garner's fifth straight after winning the 157-pound weight class at the Mike Clock Open last weekend.
Viking junior Alex Bubb followed with a 6-5 decision over Jason Appleton at 165 pounds. Bubb had trailed 4-3 going into the third period.
Another freshman, Jacob Antoine, earned a win for the Vikings as he wrestled up a weight. Normally competing at 184, Antoine defeated the Raiders' Kyle Simmons, 6-3, in the 197-pound weight class.
Despite the score, the Vikings won three of the eight matches that took place.
Southern Oregon used two opening forfeits by the Vikings to take a 12-0 lead and never trailed in the match. The Radiers won with a final score of 33-12.

In the Vikings second match of the day. Freshman Brady Garner stole the show. The 157-pound Garner picked up his sixth-straight win this season. Garner defeated Arisona State's Alex Pavlenko, 7-4.
Freshmen 149-pound Alan Dickey and 184-pound Joe Maumoynier also participated in the Vikings 9 team points. Dickey took a 8-6 lead into the last period. Maumoynier scored eight points in the final period to win, 14-8.
Portland State wrestlers connected for three wins in the final dual of the day, but fell short as Arizona State won the match-up 36-9.
PSU competes again this Tuesday. The Vikings will wrestle at Pacific University at noon, then return to the Stott Center to face Oregon State at 7:30 the same day.
