EUGENE, Ore. ? Oregon
scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning to break a 2-2 tie en route
to an 8-4 win over Portland State Wednesday afternoon at Howe Field. The
contest concluded the four-game season series between the Vikings (26-27) and
Ducks (31-22).
Junior left fielder Sari-Jane Jenkins broke the 2-2 tie with
a one-out, two-run double, scoring sophomore first baseman Carlyn Re and
sophomore second baseman Hannah Barril. Two batters later, senior shortstop
Lovena Chaput hit a three-run home run to extend Oregon's lead to 7-2. Freshman
designated player Monique Fuiava followed with another home run to cap the
inning.
The home run was the fifth of the year for Chaput, and the
sixth of the season for Fuiava.
Junior first baseman Jana Rae Slayton hit her fifth home run
of the year for Portland State, with a two-out solo shot in the fifth inning.
Freshman left-hander Brittany Rumfelt (6-3) worked five
innings to earn the win, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk.
Senior right-hander Meghan Gendron (2-1) took the loss,
allowing five runs, four earned, on three hits and one walk in 1 1/3 innings.
Slayton finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and junior third baseman
Jamee Rauch was 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Vikings out-hit the Ducks 11-10.
Jenkins went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Chaput was 2-for-3 with
four RBI to lead Oregon.
Oregon took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the first inning on a
sacrifice bunt and error off the bat of Chaput. The Vikings answered with two
runs in the top of the second on a RBI ground out by senior right fielder Shannon
Stacy and an RBI double by Rauch.
Portland State will return to action this weekend with a
four-game series at Santa Clara to conclude Pacific Coast Softball Conference
play. The series will open with a doubleheader Saturday, scheduled for noon at Marsalli
Park.
