PORTLAND ? Portland State assistant women's basketball coach Lisa Fisher has resigned from her position, head coach Sherri Murrell announced Thursday. Fisher resigned to spend more time with her family, that includes her twin daughters Ella and Kylie.
Fisher spent seven years on Murrell's staffs at the University of Pacific, Washington State and Portland State. The 2007-08 season marked Fisher's second stint as an assistant with the Vikings, as she served on former head coach Jenny Yopp's staff from 1996-2000. Both Fisher, the former Lisa Workman, and Murrell were assistants for Yopp at Portland State.
“Lisa and I have had an incredible run together for 10 years and I will miss her dearly,” Murrell said. “I'm grateful for her help in laying a winning foundation here at PSU. She is making this decision for the right reasons and I'm happy for her and her family.”
A native of Portland, Fisher started her coaching career at Idaho State, serving one year with the Bengals from 1995-96, following her playing career at Boise State. At Idaho State, Fisher was the Bengals' only full-time assistant and served as recruiting coordinator.
After her one season in Pocatello, Idaho, Fisher joined Yopp's staff at Portland State, prior to the Vikings' inaugural season in the Big Sky Conference. She helped coach Portland State to an appearance in the 1999 Big Sky Conference Championship Game, and served two seasons as recruiting coordinator.
Fisher was an assistant at Northeastern University for the 1999-2000 season before rejoining Murrell. The pair would coach together for the next seven seasons, starting with Murrell's final year at Pacific in 2001-02. Fisher then served as the associate head coach on Murrell's staff for five seasons at Washington State before returning to Portland State.
In Fisher's one-year return to the Park Blocks, she helped the Vikings post their best record on the NCAA Division I level, going 22-9. Portland State also finished 11-5 in the Big Sky Conference, tying for third, and won a Big Sky Conference Tournament game for the first time since 1999. The Vikings defeated Northern Colorado 82-69 in the quarterfinals before falling 94-80 to eventual tournament champion Montana in the semi finals.
