? Senior right-hander Mandy Hill struck out a career-high 16 and worked out
of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead Portland State
to a 3-2 win over Santa Clara in game one of a
Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader, Saturday afternoon at Marsalli Park. The Vikings scored six runs in the
first inning of the nightcap en route to an 11-0 win to sweep the twinbill.
With the wins, the Vikings (28-27, 11-7 PCSC) stay alive in
the conference title race, as they are one-game behind co-leaders Loyola
Marymount and Sacramento State with two PCSC games remaining. Portland State
needs to beat the Broncos twice, and the Lions and Hornets must both lose twice
on Sunday. Loyola Marymount will be at Saint Mary's and Sacramento
State is at San Diego.
Freshman right-hander Nichole Latham (10-10) earned the win
in game two for the Vikings.
Freshman shortstop Arielle Wiser went a combined 4-for-8 on
the afternoon to lead Portland
State at the plate.
Junior center fielder Jackie Heide hit her fifth home run of the season in game
two, hitting a three-run shot to put the Vikings up 3-0.
Senior right-hander Jackie Morales (5-21) suffered the loss
in game one, while sophomore Lauren Passafuime was charged with the loss in
game two.
Portland State and Santa Clara
(9-49, 5-13 PCSC) will conclude the four-game series and the PCSC regular
season with Sunday's doubleheader starting at noon at Marsalli Park.
Per PCSC rules, the Vikings will the designated home team in both games.
GAME 1: PORTLAND STATE 3,
SANTA CLARA 2 (10 INNINGS)
Sophomore designated player Brandi Scoggins lined a double
down the right field line to score junior pinch-runner Jessi Even and junior
first baseman Jana Rae Slayton to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead in the 10th
inning. Scoggins would advance to third on an error on the play, and scored to
make it 3-0 when freshman second baseman Brandi Campos followed with a single.
The Broncos would score two runs in the bottom of the 10th
and loaded the with no outs, but were unable to score the tying and winning
runs. Freshman pinch-hitter Jenna Fong reached on a bunt single and a throwing
error on the play allowed Ashley Grove, who was placed on the second to start
the inning per the international tiebreaker, to score and make it 3-1. Junior
first baseman Noelani Ho'opi'I followed with a single and senior pinch-hitter
Maggie Godfey was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.
Morales would then make it 3-2 with an RBI single just inside
the left field line to plate Fong. Hill would respond with back-to-back
strikeouts of senior third baseman Ashley Blier and sophomore catcher Emily
Batt. Campos
would make a diving stop on a grounder to retire sophomore center fielder
Nicole Picard at first base to end the game.
Hill (16-15) limited the Broncos to five hits while allowing
two runs, one earned. She retired first 14 batters she faced before Morales
reached on a two-out infield single in the fifth.
Morales (5-21) carried a no hitter into the seventh, before
Wiser led-off the frame with a single up the middle. Morales finished allowing
three runs, two earned, on six hits and one walk, while striking out four.
Wiser and Scoggins both went 2-for-4 for Portland State,
while Morales was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Santa
Clara.

GAME 2: PORTLAND STATE

Portland State sent 10 batters to the plate in scoring six
runs in the first inning, highlighted by Heide's three-run blast. Junior third
baseman Jamee Rauch and Wiser walked to start the game, and Heide followed with
her home run to give the Vikings a quick 3-0 lead. Two batters later, junior
designated player Jenna Wilson and Campos
reached on back-to-back two-out singles and junior catcher Kristin Wilson
tripled to center to extend the lead to 5-0. Senior right fielder Shannon Stacy
capped the inning with a bloop single to center.
Heide finished 2-for-4 with five RBI as she later added a
two-run single in the fifth to provide the 11-0 margin.
That would be plenty for Latham to work with, as she went the
distance allowing four hits and five walks. She also struck out three in
recording the shutout.
Passafuime was charged with six runs on five hits and one
walk before being lifted in the first inning after Wilson's triple.
Campos, Stacy, Wilson and Wiser also had
two hits each as the Vikings recorded 13 hits.
