Vikings Drop Season Opener 2-1 To Oregon State

The Portland State soccer team dropped its season opener on Friday, falling to Oregon State 2-1 in Corvallis, Ore.

Oregon State got on the board first, scoring when junior M/F Melissa Peck hit the back of the net in the 27th minute, assisted by sophomore M Courtney Wetzel. Junior D/M Rachael Axon scored the game-winner for the Beavers, converting a penalty kick after junior M/F Najma Homidi was fouled in the 59th minute of play. The lone score for the Vikings came from junior M Lauren Leale, who sent a header into the upper left corner of the net in the 75th minute. Junior D Suzanne Hinton and junior M Nathalie Wollmann were credited with assists on the play.

Oregon State played strong defense throughout, limiting the Vikings to just two shots-on-goal in the game. Portland State was limited to five total shots, with only one taken in the first half. The Beavers managed to fire 20 shots on junior Viking goalkeeper Cris Lewis, 15 of which were on goal.

Lewis was credited with 12 saves on the night, while Portland State had one team save. Oregon State's goalkeeping was split between freshmen Katie Bell in the first half and Colleen Boyd in the second half.

Oregon State held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks on the night. Portland State was called for 19 fouls to the Beavers' 15.

Portland State's next match is a 1 p.m. meeting with Gonzaga on Sunday, Aug. 24 in Spokane, Wash.

 

VIKING NOTES: The shot and goal tallied by Leale were both firsts in her Portland State career ... Yellow cards were issued to Portland State's Leale and Hinton, and to Oregon State's Axon ... After Friday's match, Oregon State improves its all-time record against the Vikings to 8-3-1.
