PORTLAND, Ore. ? For the second time in as many games, the Vikings played a full 110 minutes and walked away with a 1-1 draw Friday night. Portland State fired a season-high-tying 13 shots against Hawai'i and allowed a season-low 11 shots.
The Rainbow Wahine scored first when Ambree Ako and Mari Punzal had a well-executed give-and-go in the 17th minute that resulted in Punzal's first goal of the season.
Not to be out-done, the Vikings tied the score with 27 seconds remaining in the first period. On a goal kick, junior GK
Cris Lewis sent the ball sailing downfield where freshmen
Esty Geiger and
Kala Renard had broken ahead of the pack. Renard called out for Geiger to one-touch the ball, which is exactly what she did, setting up Renard for her first goal as a Viking.
PSU and Hawai'i continued to play hard in the second half, battling for every ball and creating numerous chances. In the 61st minute, junior D
Suzanne Hinton nearly missed scoring the go-ahead goal, hitting the crossbar from 35 yards out off of a set piece.
Hawai'i was able to squeeze out two shots in each overtime period, but could not find the net again. With less than a minute remaining in the second overtime, Hawai'i had an opportunity to put in the game-winner, but Hinton made a strong slide tackle near the goal box and broke up the play.
Friday's match moved the Vikings' record to 1-8-2, while the Rainbow Wahine are now 3-3-3.
Portland State will have a week off before returning to the pitch Sunday, Oct. 5 against Fresno State. The match will be played at the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation Center, and game time is set for 11 a.m.
