PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS

Vikings Sweep Montana State Behind 12 Service Aces

PORTLAND, Ore. ? Lindsey Steele and Marija Vojnovic combined for nine service aces and Portland State totaled 12 in all as the Vikings swept visiting Montana State on Saturday night in Big Sky Conference play.

Portland State (11-3, 4-0) never trailed during the match, and won by scores of 25-12, 25-17, 25-13, for its seventh-straight win over the Bobcats.

The win leaves the Vikings as the only undefeated team in the conference, and ran their Big Sky home winning streak to 27-straight matches.

The 12 aces were a season-high for PSU as Vojnovic had five and Steele added four more.

The Vikings led 9-5 in the opening stanza when Steele threw down a kill and then served five-straight points to put PSU up 15-6.

Portland State hit in .290 in the set, while the Bobcats hit for a negative percentage (-.062), committing nine attack errors.

There were four tie scores early in the second set, but the Vikings used a 9-0 run to break away from a 6-6 tie and take control. Steele had a kill to start the run and then served back-to-back aces while serving eight-straight points.

Fittingly, Nique Fradella started off the third set with an ace and Portland State never looked back, leading the whole way. A kill by Steele put the Viks up 9-3 and Vojnovic later put PSU up 15-6 on a kill of her own.

Vojnovic finished with 10 kills and eight digs, and was the only player for either squad to register double-digits in kills. She also hit .444, her best percentage of the season.

Steele tallied eight kills and seven digs, Jalen Pendon-Thomas had a match-high 12 digs, and Fradella had two aces, seven digs and 25 assists to lead all players.

MSU, which got seven kills from Nicole Grypiuk, hit just .047 for the match. Meghan Albiston led the Bobcats with 11 digs.

Portland State doesn't play at the Stott Center again until Oct. 17 when they host Sacramento State. The Vikings hit the road for three-consecutive Big Sky road matches, starting with a match at Northern Arizona on Oct. 2.

MATCH NOTES: The Vikings hit .224 for the match ... Vojnovic has nine aces in the past two matches ... Tracy Vargas led PSU with five blocks ... both teams finished with six total blocks on the night ... PSU upped its lead in the all-time series to 33-20 and 18-8 in Big Sky matches.
