PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS

Hubel, Vikings Light Up 11th-Ranked Eagles, 47-36

Portland, OR-Sophomore quarterback Drew Hubel and a nearly unstoppable Portland State offense destroyed pieces of two record books and Eastern Washington, in that order, as the Vikings outgunned the Eagles 47-36 at PGE Park Saturday afternoon.

Hubel completed 44 of 73 passes for five touchdowns ? all without an interception ? as the Vikings broke a three-game losing streak and raised their record to 2-3 for the season and 1-1 in the Big Sky Conference. Perhaps most amazing were his 623 passing yards, setting a school record, and coming one yard shy of the Big Sky and national record of 624 passing yards by Jamie Martin of Weber State (1991).

The 73 attempts tied the Big Sky single-game record of 73 set by Montana's Dave Dickenson against Idaho in 1995. The 44 completions tied the PSU record set by Neil Lomax against Northern Colorado in 1979.

Hubel's yardage beat Portland State's single-game record of 592 yards set by John Charles against Cal Poly in 1991.

Vikings junior wide receiver Mario D'Ambrosio also had a day for himself with 16 receptions for 192 yards and three touchdowns. The reception total tied the PSU record set by the late Stu Gaussoin in that same 1979 game against Northern Colorado.

The Vikings needed every inch of offensive production to stop the Eagles (2-3, 1-1), whose quarterback Matt Nichols hit 34 of 55 passes for 418 yards and two touchdowns himself.

PSU overcame an early 14-7 EWU lead on Hubel's 6-yard pass to D'Ambrosio with 9:43 left in the second quarter, then took the lead for good in the last 4:53 of the half with two Danny Urrego field goals (21, 42) and Hubel's 28-yard scoring pass to D'Ambrosio just 17 seconds before the break.

The Vikings stretched that lead out to 16 points on Urrego's third field goal, a 43-yarder, with 11:39 left in the third period, but the Eagles came back to within eight points twice.

After Nichols' scoring pass to Nathan Overbay, Hubel drove his team 87 yards in eight plays for another 16-point lead on a strike to Ty Coleman, but the Eagles again came within eight points in the fourth quarter to keep it close.

They were down 44-36 and driving for the tying touchdown when Nichols hit Aaron Boyce with a pass over the middle at midfield with less than five minutes left in the game. Boyce bobbled the pass for a moment, caught it, then had it stripped by the Vikings' Deshawn Shead. PSU defensive back Aaron Dickson picked it up to stop the drive.

That led the PSU's last scoring drive, a three-play, 55-yard number that ended with Hubel hitting Woods behind the Eagle secondary for his fifth touchdown pass of the day - a 37-yarder.

Nichols had one more touchdown left in him with 1:10 to go, but Urrego's fourth field goal with 50 seconds finally put the game out of reach.

GAME NOTES: PSU had four receivers with 100+ receiving yards: Mario D'Ambrosio (16-192-3), Aaron Woods (8-146-1), Ray Fry (7-102-0), and Daniel Wolverton (5-109-0)... Shead had two interceptions top go with his forced fumble. He now has four interceptions this season... Andy Schantz led the Vikings with 10 tackles and three pass breakups... Ryan Pedersen had nine tackles, a forced fumble and a sack.... just one yard short of the national record for passing yards in a game (623), Hubel already shares the record for passing touchdowns in a game (9) set last year.
