PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS

Viks Six-Match Winning Streak Comes To A Halt With 3-0 Loss to EWU

PORTLAND, Ore. ? Hayley Hills led Eastern Washington with 18 kills and the Eagles moved into a tie for first place in the Big Sky with a 3-0 sweep of host Portland State on Saturday night.

The Vikings had little answer for a powerful EWU offensive attack, while the Eagles seemingly dug every ball the Viks hit at them.

With the win, Eastern Washington and PSU are now tied atop the Big Sky Conference standings at 11-4. Both teams close out the regular season next week at Sacramento State.

If both squads win they would be considered the regular season co-champions. But, the Eagles hold the tie-breaker since they swept the season series with the Vikings, and they would earn the right to host next year's conference tournament.

For PSU to claim the title outright, they would need to defeat Sac State next Saturday, and have EWU lose to the Hornets the previous night.

Hills led all players in kills, getting most of hers from the left side. Alysha Cook tacked on 11 more kills, most of them coming off the right side. Cook hit .350 as the Eagles hit .211 as a team. They also finished with 63 digs, while PSU tallied just 45.

The Vikings had only 27 kills and hit just .034 on the night, their worst offensive output in conference action, and their lowest numbers since a loss to Oregon State in their third match of the season back on August 30.

Christie Hamilton and Erica Jepsen each had six kills to lead PSU, while senior libero Jalen Pendon-Thomas finished with 13 digs in her final regular season appearance at the Peter W. Stott Center.

The loss snapped a six-match winning streak for Portland State, which had also won four in a row at home.

After playing at Sacramento State next Saturday, the Vikings will get another shot on their home court when they host the Big Sky Conference Tournament, November 28-29.
