FOREST GROVE, Ore. ? Portland State sent five wrestlers to compete unattached at the Mike Clock Open on Sunday, and all five came through with victories.
Senior transfer Bryan Cantrell had the best showing for PSU, earning a second-place finish in the 174-pound weight class. Cantrell got to the championship match with a 12-4 major decision over Nick Dumolt of Clackamas Community College, an 11-4 victory over Oregon State's Alex Reser, and a 7-3 decision over the Beavers' Josh Stalcup. Oregon State's Dan Brascetta scored an 18-7 major decision over Cantrell in the final round.
At 165 pounds, sophomore Jordan Toney notched two wins, defeating Southern Oregon's Mike Lauer, 6-2, and Arminder Virk of Douglas College, 9-4. Toney's run was ended by eventual-165-pound champion Jacob McCoy of Southwestern Oregon Community College in a 7-2 decision.
Three true freshmen also gained valuable experience at the open, and each walked away with a victory to show for it. Kevin Martinez, at 125 pounds, scored a 9-5 decision over Pacific's John Cushman, Zach Monarrez won an 11-3 major decision over Frank Holdburg (SWOCC) in the 133-pound division, and 184-pounder Jeff Helbling shut out Clackamas' TJ Callaway in a major decision, 8-0.
Sunday's meet was the first open for Portland State this season, and the Vikings currently hold a 1-1 duels record.
PSU will host its first home duels of the season this Thursday as Utah Valley and Simon Fraser visit the Stott Center, with matches set to begin at 5 p.m.
