PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS

Softball Gets Swept In Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Portland State wasted one of its best hitting performances of the season and dropped a 3-2 ballgame to UC Davis, before falling to Cal Poly, 6-0, at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on Saturday.

The Vikings pounded out a season-high 10 hits against the Aggies, and got a two-run home run from Danielle Lynn, but they stranded nine runners, many of them in scoring position.

UC Davis, meanwhile, took advantage of two walks issued by PSU pitcher Nichole Latham in the third, and scored three runs in the inning. Elizabeth Santana delivered an RBI-single for the Aggies and then Sarah Axelson drove in two more with a base hit to center field.

Portland State cut the lead to one run in the sixth on Lynn's two-run shot. It was the first collegiate hit for the freshman from Spokane, Washington.

The Vikings had a chance to tie it up in the bottom of the seventh inning, getting a runner to second base with one out. But UC Davis pitcher Dana Waldusky recorded her fifth K of the contest and then induced a ground ball for the final out.

Waldusky (2-2) pitched a complete-game, walking three.

Latham took the loss to fall to 0-3. In four innings of work, the junior allowed five hits, struck out three and walked two. Anna Bertrand worked two hitless innings of relief and finished with three strikeouts.

Brandi Campos and Sadie Lopez paced the Vikings offense, going 3-for-3 and 2-for-2, respectively. Arielle Wiser added two hits.

In their afternoon game, Portland State battled Cal Poly to a scoreless draw through five innings, but Cal Poly No. 8 hitter Capri Ruiz blasted a grand slam in the sixth and Anna Cahn added a two-run homer in the seventh.

The Mustangs tallied nine hits off of two Portland State pitchers, while Cahn quieted the PSU offense for the second straight day. After limited the Vikings to three hits in a 1-0 Cal Poly victory yesterday, Cahn scattered four hits today.

Cahn struck out three in the circle and had three hits at the plate, while Ruiz and Krysten Cary both had two hits.

Becca Diede had one of the four hits for Portland State and has a four-game hitting streak going.

Tori Rogers (2-2) suffered the loss, giving up seven hits, four earned runs and three walks in six innings.

Portland State (3-7) closes out the three-day tournament on the campus of UCLA with two more games tomorrow. They face Cal State Northridge at 10 a.m., before taking on the seventh-ranked Bruins at 12:30 p.m. Gametracker will be available for both games.
