Sacramento, CA - Portland State increased its Big Sky Conference winning streak to 16 games, and its Big Sky road streak to seven straight wins, in a 79-67 victory over Sacramento State at the Hornets Nest. Both marks are PSU school records.
The Vikings improved to 2-0 in conference play, maintaining first place, and are now 11-4 on the season. The Vikings have also beaten Sac State four straight times.
Andre Murray had 16 points to lead the Vikings and Jamie Jones added 14 as five Vikings scored in double figures.
PSU trailed early, but took over the game before halftime. After Jonathan Malloy's basket gave the Hornets a 13-11 lead with 14:11 left
in the first half, the Vikings responded with a 20-4 run. It ended with a lay
up by Julius Thomas that made the score 31-17 at the 3:43 mark of the first half.
The Vikings shot 52 percent (13 of 25) from the floor in the first half to
take a 33-22 halftime lead. The Hornets went seven minutes without a basket in
the first half.
The Hornets were within seven points on two brief occasions in the second half, but Portland State maintained a double-digit lead the majority of the way. The Vikings' largest lead was 60-44 at the 6:16 mark of the second half.
PSU held Sacramento State to 23-60 from the field, a .383 mark. The Vikings made 28-59 overall (.475).
Murray had six rebounds and six assists to go with his team-high 16 points.
Loren Leath had 23 points and Antonio Flaggs added 12 points for the
Hornets (1-13, 0-1 Big Sky), who lost their eighth consecutive
game.
GAME NOTES: Julius Thomas made 5-6 shots from the field and has now made 32 of his last 43 (.744)... Portland State will try to keep its Big Sky winning streaks alive on Sunday when the Vikings play at Northern Arizona in a 1 p.m. PT game.
