PORTLAND, Ore. ? Portland State softball recruit Anna Bertrand has been named the Gatorade Oregon Softball Player of the Year.
The McMinnville High School product helped lead the Grizzlies to the Oregon Class 6A state semifinals earlier this month. The right-handed pitcher threw four no-hitters on the season and finished with 268 strikeouts in 176 innings.
A first team all-state selection as a sophomore and junior, Bertrand was also recently named the Pacific Conference Pitcher of the Year for the fourth-straight season. The all-state honors for 2009, done by The Oregonian, have yet to be announced.
Bertrand also starred offensively for McMinnville, batting .462 with five home runs, 30 RBI and a .789 slugging percentage.
A National Merit Scholar finalist who carries a 4.0 GPA, Bertrand is part of a five-player recruiting class for PSU Head Coach Tobin Echo-Hawk.
"We are obviously very proud of Anna and can't wait for her to get here in the fall," said Echo-Hawk. "She is going to be an exciting player for us, and along with the other players coming in, we will have a very talented freshman class."
The five incoming players will join a group of 12 returners from a team that won the Pacific Coast Softball Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
