PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland State track and field program announced its indoor season schedule today, less than three weeks away from its opening meet, The Jackson Open, in Nampa, Idaho Dec. 4.

Head Coach Ronnye Harrison will assume the reigns of the track and field program in his first season as head coach. Harrison was announced as the new track and field coach Aug. 2, 2009 after he spent the 2008-09 season as the interim head coach.

Harrison stated "I'm excited heading into the (first) meet. Preseason has been great... We have more people heading to our first meet and our talent pool is larger than it was last year. The team has completed a bulk of its training... and now it's time to compete."

The Vikings indoor schedule consists of seven meets, six of which will take place in the months of January and February, including the Big Sky Indoor Championship on Feb. 26-27. Portland State opens its indoor season at the Jackson Open, hosted by Boise State Dec. 4-5 in Nampa, Idaho. It is the Viks only contest before the holiday break.

The Vikings return to action for a one-day event at the Washington Indoor Preview Jan. 16 in Seattle, Wash., one of three events at the campus PSU will participate in. The following weekend Portland State will travel to Flagstaff, Ariz., for the Friday Night Challenge hosted by Northern Arizona Jan. 22.

The Viks will follow up with a two-day event Jan. 29-30 at the UW Invitational, followed by another two-day event in New York City at the NYC Armory College Invitational Feb. 5 and 6. "Outside of the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas, the meet in New York is the best in the country," said Harrison, "I truly believe you get better by competing outside of the region and it will give our athletes a chance to compete against the best."

Feb. 13 and 14 PSU will compete in its final event at Washington and the final regular season event at the Husky Classic and UW Indoor Open. Portland State will close out its season at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in Bozeman, Mont. Feb. 26-27. Those who qualify will go to the NCAA Indoor Championship in Fayetteville, Ark., March 12-13.
