Portland State golfer Kayla Morinaga was named Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Week following her victory at the Heather Farr/ Colorado Memorial in Broomfield, CO on Tuesday. Morinaga shot a two-under par 74-69-71=214 to win the title by two shots. She became the first Viking in four seasons to win an individual championship.
A junior from Waipahu, HI, Morinaga is just the third Viking to be medalist in a collegiate tournament in the 11-year history of the program. Only Taya Battistella (twice) and Rebecca Randolph had done so previously. Randolph was the most recent, winning the Bronco Fall Classic in 2003.
Morinaga recorded 10 birdies in the 54-hole tournament, which took place Monday and Tuesday at the Omni Interlocken Golf Club. With a second-round 69, Morinaga matched her career-best at Portland State and marked just the sixth sub-70 round in school history. The 54-hole total of 214 is Morinaga’s personal best as well and one shot off the school record.
A second team All-Big Sky Conference performer last year, Morinaga has earned three Big Sky Player of the Week honors in her career. Last year, she led the Viking team with a 78.1 scoring average in 2006-07. Through two tournaments and six rounds this year, she is averaging 73.8 strokes per round – a school-record pace.
