PORTLAND, Ore. - After a clean sheet in the first half, senior
Dolly Enneking swept in her 11th goal of the season and sophomore
Toni Carnovale converted a free kick for a goal in the second half to give Portland State (10-6-2, 4-1-1 Big Sky) a 2-0 shutout, the team's seventh this season, over the Wildcats.
The Vikings now stand atop the Big Sky conference heading into the final match of the season at Sacramento State Oct. 30.
Weber State opened the match as the aggressor, taking the first shot two minutes into the match and maintaining possession in the PSU backfield for just over four minutes. Once the Vikings adjusted to the cold weather, they did not look back as they fired 25 shots in the match to WSU's seven, six of which occurred in the first half.
In a span of 30 seconds in the ninth minute, PSU laid down an impressive barrage of shots as senior
Alissa Russell fed junior
Frankie Ross up the right wing of the pitch. Ross worked into the showing left but committed to the right and rifled a shot past Wildcat keeper Rebecca Ritchie, but the shot deflected off the post to senior
Kat Robertson. Robertson, freshman
Amanda Dutra and senior
Nathalie Wollmann all fired shots at the net but all were blocked by the Weber State traffic in the goal box.
In the 17th minute, Weber State was awarded a corner kick and threatened to break the seal on the scoreboard. Ari Wood fed the ball to Maggie Bartel on the far post as Bartel took the soaring ball and headed it towards the opposite post past senior
Cris Lewis. Russell was there to make the defensive save as she deflected the ball to Wood in front of the net. Wood fired a shot into the chest of Lewis and ball was cleared by the Viking defense.
In the first half, Portland State totaled 13 shots and three on goal.
In the 50th minute, Ross soared a pass to Dutra who headed the ball towards the box. With the free ball half way in the box, the Tacoma, Wash., native cleaned up the loose ball and swept it to her right to put the Viks up 1-0. The goal secured Enneking as the leading single season goal scorer in Portland State history with her 11th.
With the tie broken, Weber State increased the physicality of its play and outfouled Portland State 9-5 in half and earned two yellow cards.
Shannon Thompson earned the Wildcats final yellow card of the match in the 70th minute. The free kick was awarded just outside of the goal box. Carnovale, who had already fired a shot off a free kick earlier in the match, assumed the role again and fired a pinball-like shot that bounced off the right and left post and into the net to secure the Vikings lead, 2-0.
Sophomore
Esty Geiger almost added another insurance goal in the 75th minute, but Ritchie was there to make the diving stop and keep it a two-goal match.
This afternoon's victory secures Portland State's No. 1 position in the Big Sky, as Eastern Washington fell to Northern Arizona, 4-2. NAU is one point behind PSU in the standings, followed by Sacramento State and Eastern Washington tied for third-place and three points behind the Vikings.
The win also secures PSU's second 10-win season in the program's 17-year history. In 2002, the Vikings finished 13-5-4 and were one game away from the NCAA Tournament. The program won its only Big Sky Championship in 2004.
The Vikings will control their own destiny Friday at Sacramento State as they play for the Big Sky Conference Championship and a chance to host the Big Sky Tournament. The match will begin at 1 p.m. The Hornets and Viks closed the regular season against each other last year in a 0-0 double overtime tie. A win would have secured the Big Sky Championship for the Vikings.
