Eugene, OR- Portland State will begin its competition in Eugene, Ore. at the Pac-10 Wrestling Championships, Sunday. The Vikings will be sending eight wrestlers to the tournament and will looking to have their first national qualifier since 2005.
The Pac-10 Championships may be the final collegiate match for Viking seniors Dale Seley and Jake Schneider. Both wrestlers will be looking to extend their college careers by qualifying for the national tournament.
Seley has amounted a 9-6 record this season with a 5-4 record against Pac-10 competition. He is currently ranked fifth in at the 174 lbs weight-class in the Pac-10. Seley has picked up key wins against Oregon's Ron Lee and CS-Bakersfield's Jason Points. He lost to the top ranked Nate Lee of Boise State, 4-2, and second ranked Luke Feist, 3-2.
Schneider leads the Vikings with a 22-9 record. He marks the first Portland State wrestler to earn 20+ wins in six years. Schneider currently ranks ninth in the Pac-10 at the 197 lbs weight-class with a 5-6 record against conference opponents. He has previously defeated the fifth-ranked, Jake Johnson from Stanford, 2-1, this season. Schneider was edged out by the fourth ranked, Matt Casperson of Boise State, 6-4.
Schneider and Seley will qualify for the NCAA national tournament if they place at least third in their weight-class, or they may be chosen as one of the Pac-10's six wildcards. Overall, there will be 36 national qualifiers from the Pac-10.
