No. 1 Alabama Downs Portland State 8-2

SEATTLE ? Junior third baseman Kelley Montalvo hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie as No. 1 Alabama defeated Portland State 8-2 Friday afternoon at the Husky Softball Classic. The Vikings trailed No. 25 Washington 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning in the second game Friday, that was suspended due to rain.

Friday's game against the Huskies will be completed Sunday. Portland State (6-10) will play Nevada at 9:00 a.m., Saturday morning in its only game of the day at the Husky Softball Classic.

Portland State took advantage of a two-out wild pitch and an error, on the same play, to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Junior second baseman Jamee Rauch and freshman shortstop Arielle Wiser opened the game with back-to-back singles. Rauch scored from third on a third-strike wild pitch to sophomore catcher Brandi Scoggins, and Wiser, after moving to third on the wild pitch, scored on the play after a throwing error by junior catcher Ashley Holcombe attempting to force Scoggins at first base.

Alabama scored a run in the first and second inning to tie the game at 2-2. Senior first baseman Dani Woods had a two-out RBI single in the first inning and junior center fielder Brittany Rogers had an RBI fielder's choice grounder in the second.

In the fourth inning, senior right fielder Katie Johnson reached on a lead-off single. Senior right-hander Mandy Hill then retired the next two batters before Montalvo hit her second home run of the season to give the Crimson Tide the lead.

Alabama broke the game open with four runs on just two hits in the sixth inning. Woods had an RBI single to make it 5-2. The Crimson Tide scored three more runs with Montalvo scoring from third on an illegal pitch, and Holcombe and Johnson drawing back-to-back bases loaded walks.

Sophomore right-hander Charlotte Morgan (4-0) worked five innings to earn the win. She allowed two unearned runs on four hits and one walk, while striking out four.

Senior right-hander Chrissy Owens entered the game in the top of the sixth inning, following a lead-off double by junior center fielder Jackie Heide, and Alabama leading 4-2. She worked two scoreless innings to earn her fourth save of the year, allowing two hits and striking out five.

Hill (4-6) was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. She also struck out four.

Alabama out-hit Portland State 9-6.

Woods was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Morgan also went 2-for-2 to lead the Crimson Tide at the plate.

Rauch went 2-for-4 and Heide was 2-for-2 for Portland State.
