SEATTLE ? Junior third baseman Kelley Montalvo
hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning to
break a 2-2 tie as No. 1 Alabama defeated Portland State
8-2 Friday afternoon at the Husky Softball Classic. The Vikings trailed No. 25
Washington 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning in the second game Friday,
that was suspended due to rain.
Friday's game against the Huskies will be completed Sunday. Portland State
(6-10) will play Nevada
at 9:00 a.m., Saturday morning in its only game of the day at the Husky
Softball Classic.
Portland State took advantage of a two-out wild pitch and an error,
on the same play, to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Junior second baseman
Jamee Rauch and freshman shortstop Arielle Wiser opened the game with
back-to-back singles. Rauch scored from third on a third-strike wild pitch to
sophomore catcher Brandi Scoggins, and Wiser, after moving to third on the wild
pitch, scored on the play after a throwing error by junior catcher Ashley
Holcombe attempting to force Scoggins at first base.
Alabama
scored a run in the first and second inning to tie the game at 2-2. Senior
first baseman Dani Woods had a two-out RBI single in the first inning and
junior center fielder Brittany Rogers had an RBI fielder's choice grounder in
the second.
In the fourth inning, senior right fielder Katie Johnson
reached on a lead-off single. Senior right-hander Mandy Hill then retired the
next two batters before Montalvo hit her second home run of the season to give
the Crimson Tide the lead.
Alabama
broke the game open with four runs on just two hits in the sixth inning. Woods
had an RBI single to make it 5-2. The Crimson Tide scored three more runs with
Montalvo scoring from third on an illegal pitch, and Holcombe and Johnson
drawing back-to-back bases loaded walks.
Sophomore right-hander Charlotte Morgan (4-0) worked five
innings to earn the win. She allowed two unearned runs on four hits and one
walk, while striking out four.
Senior right-hander Chrissy Owens entered the game in the top
of the sixth inning, following a lead-off double by junior center fielder
Jackie Heide, and Alabama
leading 4-2. She worked two scoreless innings to earn her fourth save of the
year, allowing two hits and striking out five.
Hill (4-6) was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs on nine
hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. She also struck out four.
Alabama out-hit Portland State 9-6.
Woods was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Morgan also went 2-for-2
to lead the Crimson Tide at the plate.
Rauch went 2-for-4 and Heide was 2-for-2 for Portland State.
NOTES: Wiser's
single in the first inning extended her hit streak to a season-high five games
... Portland State is now 0-2 all-time against No.
1-ranked opponents ... The Vikings lost 5-0 to No. 1 UCLA in 2004 in their only
other game against a No. 1-ranked team ... Friday's game was the second-ever
meeting between the Crimson Tide and Vikings ... Alabama won 2-1 in a game played
in Honolulu, Hawai'i in 2005.
