Last Time Out

Although it seems like weeks ago, the Vikings were last in action Oct. 30 at Sacramento State to close out the regular season. A PSU win would seal its regular season championship and solidify the Vikings No. 1 seed in this week's tournament. The teams battled it out for 90 minutes in regulation and another 20 in two overtime periods. Senior Dolly Enneking fired a shot with two seconds left in regulation that was saved by the Sac State goalkeeper. Enneking totaled two shots on goal and junior Frankie Ross tallied one as well.

The Vikings left Sacramento State with uncertainty as their fate rested in the hands of Northern Colorado. Portland State boarded a plane back to the Rose City and when they arrived at Portland International Airport, they found out they were league champions as UNC upset Northern Arizona, 4-0. How's that for a wild Friday night?

Bring Out the MVP Brooms

Seniors Dolly Enneking and Cris Lewis were respectively named the Big Sky's Offensive and Defensive MVP's after turning in career years and rewriting the Portland State record book. It is only the third time in the conference's 13 seasons that a team has swept the MVP awards. Weber State accomplished the feat last season and Montana did the same in 2004.

Enneking tallied 11 goals and three assists in 19 games this season. She owns the career points and goals records with 55 and 22, respectively. She also owns Portland State's single season goals record.

Lewis sports a 0.98 goals against average and an .839 save percentage in 19 appearances. She owns the single season shutouts record with eight so far and also owns the career wins, saves and shutouts records.

The Vikings and the Tournament
Portland State is making its fifth Big Sky Championship appearance in its 13 season in the Big Sky. The Viks hold a 1-5 record all-time in postseason play, having advanced to the championship in 2002. The Vikings only postseason win was a 1-0 shutout over Montana, before falling in overtime to the Bengals, 1-0, one match away from the NCAA Tournament. This is the third consecutive appearance for the Vikings and the second straight matchup against Northern Arizona in the semifinals.

Are You In the Game?
For those of you that missed it, Head Coach Laura Schott was on 95.5 The Game with John Strong Wednesday evening to discuss the Vikings local laden roster and the Big Sky Championship.

About Northern Arizona

The fourth seeded Lumberjacks enter the match with a 9-8-1 record overall and 4-3-0 record against Big Sky opponents. The Jacks, like the Viks, had an opportunity to win the regular season championship after the Portland State tie against Sacramento State. NAU would have won with a win, but fell to UNC, 4-0, in Greeley, Colo.

Against teams in this year's tournament, the Lumberjacks are 2-1 and have outscored the three opponents 8-5 in those matches. They defeated PSU, 1-0, lost to Idaho State, 4-2, and defeated Eastern Washington 4-2 Oct. 25. The Jacks won last season's tournament and represented the Big Sky in the College Cup against No. 2 Portland and lost, 6-1.

Jenna Samora leads the way for NAU scorers with 14 points on six goals and two assists and was selected first team All-Big Sky. Samora is followed closely by Kristi Andreassen, Sarah Neatherton and Brenna Boies, who have all accumulated 10 points in 2009. Andreassen was a first team selection as a defender for the Jacks. Tori Rocke has been the anchor in net with 14 appearances, with 1,255 minutes played and a save percentage of .630.

About Eastern Washington
The Eagles sport a 7-8-2 overall record and finished in second-place with a 4-2-1 register in the Big Sky. Eastern started off the Big Sky season red hot with wins over Weber State and Idaho State. They scored an early goal against the Viks Oct. 16, before surrendering a goal with 42 seconds left in regulation to end the match in a 1-1 tie. Determined to win the championship they defeated Sac State two days after the tie but fell to UNC and NAU the following weekend. They ended the season with a 1-0 win over Montana.

As equated, the Eagles are 2-1-1 against this season's tournament field. Their leading scorer, Brittany Sparks, is tied for the league lead in goals with 11, three of which were the game-winning mark. Whitney Brannan follows behind Sparks in points with 13 on five goals and three assists. Lisa Dimak has played two-thirds of all the minutes this season, with 1038 between the pipes. She sports a .770 save percentage and a 1.47 goals against average.

About Idaho State
The third seeded Bengals enter the tournament 9-7-0 and 4-3-0 against Big Sky foes. ISU was in a do or die position entering the final match of the season, as a win would punch their championship ticket and a loss would end it. Idaho State would go on to manhandle the Wildcats, 4-0, on Halloween and clinch their sixth postseason appearance and end Sac State's season.

Idaho State is only 1-2 against the field, only defeating Northern Arizona, 4-2. The Bengals fell to Portland State, 4-1, on the Viks home turf. They are the only visiting team to play a game at PCC - Rock Creek this season.

Ashley Jones was named the Big Sky's Newcomer of the Year after leading the team in scoring with five goals and assists (15 points). The Bengals had two first team selections in defender Karissa Hennage-Fisher and Annamarie Hofsetter, the Big Sky's all-time leader in assists (25). Bailey Williams anchors the net with 1,458 minutes played, a 1.36 goals against average and a .732 save percentage.
