Carnovale and Ross Headline All-Big Sky Team for Vikings

OGDEN, Utah
- The Portland State women's soccer program had six players named to this year's All-Big Sky soccer team, as announced by the conference office. Senior forward Frankie Ross and junior defender Toni Carnovale headline this year for Portland State, earning first-team honors for the second time in their careers.

The Vikings also had four other players recognized by the Big Sky as midfielders freshman Eryn Brown and sophomore Amanda Dutra were selected to the second-team. Junior defender Esty Geiger and freshman midfielder Hannah Kimsey were named honorable mention.

Northern Colorado's Danielle Birdsall was named Offensive MVP, while Northern Arizona's Kristi Andreassen and Chelsea Bednarz were named Defensive MVP and Newcomer of the Year, respectively.

Carnovale, a Seattle, Wash., native, has started 15 matches for the Vikings and made 18 appearances this season. She's also contributed a goal and an assist for the Vikings, scoring off a free kick in a 3-0 win at Weber State. The steady Carnovale was named to last year's Big Sky First-Team and All-Tournament teams.

The forward from Oakland, Calif., Ross, has had one of the more decorated careers at Portland State as she was a first team selection and the Golden Boot trophy winner in 2008 as a sophomore. Ross leads the team this year in scoring with five goals and four assists. Last season she earned second team all-conference honors and was honorable mention in her freshman season. Ross is tied for third all-time at Portland State in points scored, 35, and is fourth all-time in goals, 12.

Brown bursted onto the scene quickly for Portland State in her freshman campaign, scoring four goals in seven Big Sky contests. The Camas, Wash., native scored two goals at Weber State, and registered others against Eastern Washington and Northern Colorado. She finished the season with five goals and first scored coming off the bench versus Western Oregon. She started the final nine matches of the season.

Dutra, a native of Sherwood, Ore., earned her the second distinction on the Big Sky's second-team, finishing with two goals and four assists. The former Oregon 5A State Player of the Year nailed the game-winner off a penalty kick against Eastern Washington and registered two assists in conference. She is already tied for sixth all-time with the Vikings in assists in her career with nine.

The native of Eugene, Geiger, registered two assists in Big Sky play and has a total of a goal and three assists. She scored a goal, the first of her career and the game-winner in double overtime, and an assist against Louisiana-Monroe Aug. 27. It is her first distinction.

Kimsey, a freshman from Vancouver, Wash., scored two goals for the Vikings in conference and also registered two game-winning goals from the midfield. She's already totaled three goals and an assist this season.
