WEEKEND RECAP
Porltland State did something they had never done before two weeks ago at the Las Vegas Invitational: Bounce back from an 0-2-0 start to become 2-2-0.

In dramatic fashion, the Vikings defeated Louisiana at Monroe, 3-2, in the 104th minute in double overtime. Sophomore Amanda Dutra fired a shot on goal that was blocked by the Warhawk defense, leavin junior Esty Geiger to clean up the loose ball for the win and notch her first-career goal.

Against Albany, the Vikings offense flourished  as poured on a 3-0 win against the Great Danes. Hannah Kimsey sealed the match in the seventh minute with the first goal of her career.

In the 85th minute, Melissa Trammell scored an insurance goal and Frankie Ross tacked another on with 1:05 left in the contest.

SCHOTT FOR THE STARS

Head Coach Laura Schott, reigning co-Big Sky Coach of the Year, passed predecessor Tim Bennett Aug. 29 on the Portland State all-time wins chart. She is now third all-time with 17 wins. Schott surpassed Bennett’s 16 with her victory over Albany. Former coaches Bernie Fagen and Tara Erickson tie for first with 29 wins each.

ONCE, TWICE, THREE TIMES THE SCORING
For the first time against a pair of Division I opponents, the women’s soccer team scored three goals in back-to-back games Aug. 27 and 29 against ULM and Albany.

The Viks last accomplished the feat Oct. 10 and 12, 1999 against Gonzaga, (L, 3-5) and Western Baptist, now Corban, (W, 5-1).

ABOUT OREGON STATE

The Beavers are currently ranked 21st in the Soccer America poll, 15th in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll and are receiving votes, 8, in the NSCAA poll. OSU owns a flawless 3-0-0 record thus far, the teams best start since 2004.

The Beavs have outscored their opponents 6-0 in three matches this season, having defeated Pacific, UC Davis and Seattle U. It will be their only match of the weekend. Melinda Ingalls leads the team in scoring with two goals and an assist (five points).

ABOUT WESTERN OREGON
The Wolves own an 0-2-0 record having lost a piar of matches down in California last weekend. Marina Austin scored for Western in their first match against Sonoma State, but they still fell 2-1 in the contest. WOU fell 4-0 in their match against Cal State Stanislaus Sept. 4.

Ausitin is also the Wolves leading scorer with the goal.

SHE’S HONORED

Junior transfer Melissa Trammell was named the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week for her two goal weekend in Las Vegas.

Her goal against ULM sent PSU to overtime with the Warhawks, before Esty Geiger nailed the gamewinner. Her second all but assured victory for Portland State against Albany.

SPREADING THE WEALTH

In the Vikings four game this season, seven different players have scored goals for PSU, while 11 different players have registered points (either a goal, an assist or both) on the 28 women roster.

Melissa Trammell leads the team in goals with two, while Amanda Dutra leads the team with two assists. Dutra, a second-team All-Big Sky selection a year ago, led the Vikings with five assists last year.

THE COMEBACK KID
Senior goalkeeper Rachel Jarvis is now in her fifth-year with the Vikings, after redshirting in 2009.

Against Portland Aug. 20, the senior made her first start since Sept. 27, 2007, coincidentally at then-No. 3 Portland. In one half against the Pilots, Jarvis made three saves and allowed four goals in the ’07 contest. In this year’s affair, the Lake Oswego native tallied13 saves and only allowed one goal in 90 minutes.
Her last appearance before last weekend was Sept. 1, 2008 against then-No. 3 UCLA in relief of former PSU goalkeeper Cris Lewis.

CAPTAINS OF THE SHIP
As voted by the players of the defending Big Sky Champions, the Vikings have selected seniors Rachel Jarvis, Emily Rohde and junior Tish Wise as the captains of the 18th Vikings soccer team.

Wise, formerly Parsons, was a captain of last year’s championship squad.

THREE: THE MAGIC NUMBER
Portland State Head Soccer Coach Laura Schott will be entering her third-season at the helm of the Vikings squad. Schott was named the Big Sky’s co-Coach of the Year after leading the Vikings to the Big Sky Regular Season Championship (4-1-2 in conference) and a 10-6-4 record overall. She enters the 2010 season as the winningest coach in the Big Sky over the last two seasons, with an 8-2-4 record (.714 winning percentage).
In her first season as head coach, Schott finished with a 5-11-4 overall record and a 4-1-2 record en route to a second-place finish in the conference. She is currently third all-time victories at Portland State (17).

NEW HOME
Over the years, Portland State soccer has called several facilities around the Portland-Metro Area home and this year is no different. After playing all of their home matches at PCC-Rock Creek last season, the Vikings will call Hillsboro Stadium home for the 2010 season. The facility will also play host to the PSU football program while PGE Park gets a facelift for the Portland Timbers MLS debut in 2011.

THE ROAD AHEAD
The Vikings will take on four NCAA Tournament qualifiers from 2009 in their first eight matches this season. PSU opened at Portland Aug. 20 and followed with Boise State Aug. 22 in Portland. PSU takes on Oregon State Sept. 10 and San Diego Sept. 19 on the road. The Vikings will face a fifth NCAA Tournament qualifier, Northern Arizona,  Oct. 17.

QUEST FOR THE CUP
Portland State has qualified for the Big Sky Tournament each of the last three seasons, an unprecented accomplishment for the program. However, the Vikings have never won the tournament and received the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA College Cup.
In 2002, the Viks played Idaho State for the Big Sky Tournament Championship and lost 1-0 in overtime. It is PSU’s only appearance in the championship game.
