Meet Schedule
The Portland State track and field program starts its 2011-12 campaigns this Friday and Saturday (Dec. 2-3) at the Jacksons Open and Multi Meet at the Jacksons Indoor Track at the Idaho Center in Nampa, Idaho. The event is hosted by Boise State University.
“We have probably the best team in the history of Portland State track and field on the women's side and we certainly have a better group of young men then we've had in years,” Track and Field Head Coach
Ronnye Harrison said. “We are all really excited to get to Boise and get this season started.”
Jacksons Open and Multi Meet Specifics
The Jacksons Open and Multi Meet will begin on Friday (Dec. 3) at 3 p.m. PST with the women's 60-meter hurdles to kick off the women's pentathlon. The first session, which will be held Friday afternoon and evening, will consist of the Multi Events, the weight throw and the men's pole vault. Saturday will finish the multi events and consist of open field and running events. Competition on Saturday begins at 8 a.m.
Competition
The Vikings will join 14 other schools competing in the Jacksons Open. Joining the Vikings will be host Boise State as well as Stanford, Cal State Northridge, Nevada (women), Central Washington, Lewis-Clark, St. Martin's, Warner Pacific, Academy of Art, Northwest Nazarene, Treasure Valley Community College, Pacific United, R.A.W. SPEED, and Summit Track Club in their first meet of the season.
Portland State Indoor Schedule
Portland State kicks off it's indoor track season at the Jacksons Open which is the first of its eight indoor track meets culminating with the Big Sky Indoor Championship in Flagstaff, Ariz. Feb. 24-25. Following this weekend in Nampa, the Vikings will have over a month off before heading to their next meet at the UW Indoor Preview in Seattle, Wash. on Jan. 14. The Vikings will then head to Albuquerque, N.M. for the Cherry & Silver Invitational (Jan. 14) before returning to Seattle for the UW Invitational Jan. 27-28. The Vikings will compete at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational (Feb. 2-3), The Don Kirby Elite Invitational (Feb. 10) and the Husky Classic (Feb. 11) before heading to Arizona for the conference championship.
Portland State Key Returners
The Vikings return all six, two men and four women, who competed at the NCAA West Regional in Eugene, Ore. last season.
Geronne Black,
Karene King,
Anaiah Rhodes and
Joenisha Vinson all advanced to the NCAA West Regional as part of the 4x100-meter relay team. Black also competed in the 100-meters. King also competed in the 100 and 200-meters and Vinson also competed in the 100-meter hurdles.
Tony Crisofulli competed in the 800-meters at the NCAA West Regional while Sean Mackelvie threw the javelin on the men's side.
It was a historic year for the Vikings with 11 total school records broken during the 2010-11 season, eight on the women's side and three on the men's.
Black, Vinson, Rhodes and King teamed up to break the school record in the 4x100-meters to advance to the NCAA West Regional while Rhodes,
Dominique Maloney, King and Vinson teamed up for the 4x400-meter school record.
Vinson added individual records in the indoor 60-meter hurdles as well as the indoor pentathlon. Black set the school record, and tied the conference record, for the indoor 60-meters while King set individual records in the indoor 200-meters as well as the outdoor 100 and 200-meter events.
On the men's side, Crisofulli and
J.J. Rosenberg helped set the school record in the 4x400-meter relay while Crisofulli set individual school records in the indoor and outdoor 800-meters.
The Vikings look to capitalize on the success and experience of its veteran returners, along with the addition of some tremendous new talent, to improve on their success from last year and break through that next barrier and advance to the NCAA Championships.
