Portland State football has signed two junior college defensive backs to national letters of intent for 2012 during the early JC signing period.
David Edgerson, a safety from Grossmont College (CA), and Dennis Fite, a cornerback from Mt. San Jacinto JC (CA), have both signed with the Viking program.
Edgerson is a 5-11, 205-pounder originally from Slidell, LA. He attended Salmen High School before going to Grossmont. This past season, Edgerson was second on his team with 66 tackles, had four tackles for loss, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and three pass breakups. Edgerson earned second team All-Southern Conference honors. He had also been offered by Sacramento State.
Fite is a 6-3, 190-pounder originally from Citrus Hills, CA where he attended Citrus Hills HS. Fite had four interceptions for 102 return yards and two touchdowns in 2011. He also had 53 tackles, a team-high 10 pass breakups, three tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Fite was also offered by Montana.
"We do not recruit JC student-athletes to provide depth. David and Dennis will have the opportunity to compete for starting spots immediately as will the players we have already on the roster,” said Viking Coach
Nigel Burton. “With our top three safeties graduating, in addition to
David Ross, we feel great about their ability to come in, provide leadership and be playmakers. Our team, staff, and football alumni in the area welcome them to the Viking family."
Edgerson and Fite are the first two new Vikings for 2012. PSU has lost four significant players in its defensive backfield to graduation (safeties
DeShawn Shead,
Donte Almond and
Manoa Latu, and cornerback
David Ross).
The national letter of intent signing period for all student-athletes is February 1.
