ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior
Karene King broke the school record in the 200-meters this evening at the Don Kirby Invitational, hosted by New Mexico at the Albuquerque Convention Center. She clocked a time of 24.02 seconds, shattering Jernise Saunders school-record of 24.14 and surpassing her indoor personal-best by .29 seconds.
King, a native of Tortola, British Virgin Islands, also broke the 200-meters record for her home country with her time, whom she competes for in the offseason. King entered the meet with Big Sky's top mark in the 200-meters by.63 seconds and likely increased that lead after her performance. The time would place her back in the NCAA's top-50 indoor marks in the 200-meters.
Also sprinting at the meet, sophomore
Geronne Black recorded a raw time of 7.45 (7.47 at altitude) in the 60-meters, a new personal-record and a mere .01 shy of the school-record. Like King, Black recorded her previous best at the Cherry & Silver Invitational in Albuquerque Jan. 22 and still owns the top-time in the Big Sky.
Also recording a new personal-best was junior transfer
Anaiah Rhodes, who registered a 7.71 (7.73 after altitude adjustment) in the 60-meters, surpassing her old best of 7.86. The time qualifies her for the Big Sky Championship in the event and places her in the conferences top-five.
The rest of the Vikings will be in action tomorrow at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. Portland State will be competing at the Big Sky Championship Feb. 25-26 in Pocatello, Idaho.
