STANFORD, Calif. - The Portland State track team made some big ripples in the track pond on day one of the Stanford Invitational as sophomore
Geronne Black led the way, breaking the Portland State record in the 100-meters to finish second with a time of 11.65 seconds.
Though Black's time was wind-aided, the time surpassed former Viking Jernise Saunders time of 11.69. Saunders was an NCAA qualifier in 2009. Black qualified for the finals by winning her heat with a time of 11.80, a personal record at the time by .12 seconds. Washington's Dominique Lauderdale won the event with a time of 11.54 seconds.
Even with Lauderdale finishing in front of her, Black's time currently is the eighth-fastest in the West region. The time is also the fourth-fastest time in Big Sky history and .10 seconds shy of the all-time record.
Senior
Karene King, also competing in the 100-meters, finished sixth overall in the 100-meters with a time of 11.82 seconds. She recorded a personal-best in the preliminary race with a 11.81 and finished second behind Black in their heat. She will compete in the 200-meters tomorrow afternoon in hopes of matching Black's feat.
Senior
Adrienne Davis won the collegiate flight of the shot put competition, recording a throw of 43 feet, 5.25 inches. Big Sky foe Erica Chaney of Eastern Washington won the invitational flight with a mark of 48-2.5.
Sophomore Sean Mackelvie finished third in his flight of the men's javelin competition with a throw of 199-6, improving his season best mark by four feet and one inch. Mackelvie entered the weekend with the Big Sky's top-mark in the event.
Freshman
Zach Carpenter improved his season-best time in the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:00.47, surpassing his old time by eight seconds. The time places him behind senior
John Lawrence for PSU's season-best time in the event by three seconds.
The Vikings will continue tomorrow morning for day two and the conclusion of the Stanford Invitational.
