FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Portland State won three events at the Pacific Twilight meet, April 29 and 30, two in the women's sprints and the other in the men's distance squad.
John Lawrence won the 3,000-meter steeplechase and sprinters
Geronne Black and
Karene King won the 100 and 200-meters, respectively.
Lawrence, a native of Reno, Nev., coincidently was competing in his first steeplechase since the Pacific Preview March 12. He had taken a month off doing rehab for an injury and returned to action at the Oregon Relays last Friday April 22 and finished with a time of 9 minutes and 33.35 seconds.
Senior
Nate Endicott was also racing in his first steeplechase since the Pacific Preview and finished closely behind Lawrence in 9:35.24, just .24 shy of meeting the Big Sky's Outdoor Championship qualifying mark..
King set the track record in the 200-meters with her time of 24.54, breaking the record held by former-Viking Jernise Saunders' mark by .10 seconds. Also nearly setting a new track record was sophomore Black in the 100-meters, who finished with a time of 12.24 seconds. She was shy of tying the mark, also set by Saunders, by only .02 seconds.
In the throws, freshman
Allison Burkett finished fourth in the women's javelin with a throw of 131 feet, while teammate Sean Mackelvie finished third in the men's javelin with a heave of 201 feet. Mackelvie also finished sixth in the triple jump at 43-7.75.
Freshman
Shae Carson finished eighth in the women's discus with her throw of 128-1 and has found consistency the past couple of meets, teetering around the 130 foot mark.
In the 100-meter hurdles, sophomore
P'Lar Dorsett finished third with a time of 15.27 seconds. Sophomore
Jordan Bird recorded a PR in the 100-meters with a time of 11.48 seconds, besting his previous best .03.
