Viking Women Finish Seventh; King Sweeps Short Sprint Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior Karene King led the Portland State track team at the Big Sky Championship to a seventh-place finish with gold medals in the 100-meters, 200-meters and the 4x100 relay. PSU trailed fifth-place, Weber State, by a single point in the final team standings and scored 65 points overall, 20 of which came from King individually.

All told including the heptathlon, the Vikings won a total of eight medals at the championship, the most recorded since Head Coach Ronnye Harrison took over the track and field program in fall 2008.

King, a native of Tortola, British Virgin Islands, won the 100-meters with a time of 11.83 seconds, edging teammate Geronne Black, the defending Big Sky Champion in the event, by .03 seconds. It is the second-straight season the Vikings have gone one-two in the 100-meters, with King claiming the silver last year.

Portland State has now claimed seven of the last eight Big Sky Championships in the 100-meters.

With a fierce tailwind in the 200-meters, King would also claim gold with her time of 23.93 seconds, defeating Sacramento State's Victoria Humphrey by .35 seconds. King was the Big Sky's silver medalist in 2010, finishing behind Eastern Washington's Brianna Okoro. Black also scored team points in the 200-meters, finishing sixth with a time of 24.90 seconds.

With a final time of 45.75, the PSU women claimed a championship in the 4x100-meter relay. The Viks ran the race in the middle of the track, lane four, with Black starting it off to make up ground on the outside lanes. Junior Joenisha Vinson ran the second leg and bolted down the straight-away to junior Anaiah Rhodes.

Rhodes gritted the race through injury and passed the baton off to King, who trailed Sacramento State's Humphrey by three-to-four meters. After receiving the handoff, King darted after the Hornet and surpassed Humphrey within the last 15-meters to clinch the Viks first Big Sky Championship in the event since 2006.

The women's 100-meter hurdles was a much anticipated race, as three-former conference champions were in the field. After entering the day with the top-time in prelims, 13.72, Vinson was neck-and-neck Sakya Bolton through all-10 hurdles and the last 10.5-meters of the race. Vinson was edged by Bolton by .02 for gold, but went on shatter her own school-record, set yesterday, with a time of 13.59.

Junior Tony Crisofulli won the first outdoor medal of his career in the 800-meters with a final time of 1:50.51 to finish second overall. The Vail, Colo., native ran a 50 second split on his first lap and had a lead of 15-meters throughout the race. However, in the last 30-meters of the race, Montana State's Patrick Casey passed Crisofulli and claimed the championship at 1:49.61.

Junior DeShawn Shead, with literally only one-hour's practice Thursday evening since finishing spring football practice, finished third in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.52, only .02 seconds behind second-place finisher Slater Powell of Montana State. In the same race, freshman Luke Leddige finished seventh with a time of 15.20 and contribute two points to the men's 28.50.

Sacramento State's Ronald Brookins won his fourth-consecutive championship in the 100-meter hurdles and closed his Big Sky Championship career with 100-plus points scored at the BSC's.

Despite not reaching the medal stand, the men's 4x400 relay team broke the school record with a 3:15.06, just edging the old record of 3:15.14, to finish sixth overall.

Also just shy of the medal stand was junior Sean Mackelvie, finishing fourth in the men's javelin with a throw of 214-1.

Mackelvie, like many of his teammates, is looking forward to the NCAA West Regional May 26-28 in attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championship. The regional will be hosted at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. For more information on the meet and to buy tickets in advance, visit GoDuck.com.
