SACRAMENTO, Calif. - If Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day, no one would have known it at the Big Sky Championship for Portland State. Senior
Karene King set a school-record in the 100-meters and set the conference record in the 200-meters. Juniors
Tony Crisofulli and
Joenisha Vinson set school-records as well, flying through the 800-meters at 1:49.02 and 13.72 in the 100-meter hurdles, respectively. All three will enter tomorrow's final with the top ranked times.
King, a native of Tortola, British Virgin Islands, recorded her best-ever 100 after teammate
Geronne Black ran 11.69 seconds to win the first heat. Minutes later, King surpassed Black's time and set the PSU record with a time of 11.59, .01 seconds shy of the Big Sky Championship record.
An hour and 15 minutes later, King lined up in lane No. 1 for the 200-meters. After a slight delay by a jack rabbit on the track, forcing the runners out of their blocks, King blew away her competition with a staggering wind-aided time of 23.46 seconds, the fastest-time in Big Sky history by .06 seconds and in Portland State history by .31 seconds.
By surpassing the 23.50 barrier, King qualify's for the IAAF World Championships Aug. 27-Sept. 4 in Daegu, South Korea for her home country, the British Virgin Islands. King broke the record set by Anetta Wells of Cal State Northridge in 1999.
One hour before King set the 100-meters record, it was Vinson in the 100-meter hurdles setting the Vikings tone for the day. Winning the silver medal in Wednesday and Thursday's heptathlon, the Phoenix, Ariz., native roasted her own record with a 13.72, defeating her nearest opponent by .11 seconds.
The final record breaker, Crisofulli, started his 800-meters race with a blistering pace, recording a 52 second split after the first lap. Though he showed a slight sign of fatigue, he picked up the pace in the last 120-meters to nearly break 1:49 for the first time in his career. The Vail, Colo., native broke his previous season best by .09 seconds.
Several other Portland State athletes set PR's at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex, highlighted by senior
Adrienne Davis, who finished fourth in the shot put. The Portland native threw 46-4.75 on her second throw of the preliminary to enter the final round in third. Montana State's Amanda Murphy surpassed Davis on her final throw and put Davis in fourth at the end of the competition. Davis closes her career No. 2 all-time on the Park Blocks.
