Vikings Finish Day Two of NCAA West Regional; 4x100 Relay Looking For National Bid

EUGENE, Ore.
- A day after qualifying for the NCAA West Regional quarterfinals in the 100-meters, sophomore Geronne Black finished her season as the 20th-best 100-meter sprinter in the West region. Portland State 4x100 relay team will now look to punch its ticket to te NCAA Championship tomorrow afternoon.

Black, who became the youngest-Viking to ever advance to the quarterfinal at the NCAA West Regional, closed her individual season in the 100-meters, finishing 20th overall in the quarterfinal with a time of 11.95 seconds. Black finished seventh in her heat and would have advanced to the NCAA Championship with a time under 11.67, .02 seconds slower than her season-best 11.65.

Black's accomplishments this season have been nothing short of spectacular as she entered 2011 with a PR of 11.92 seconds, and dropped to 11.65 at the Stanford Invitational March 25. With two full seasons at Portland State remaining, there is no question that she will be back in the regional quarterfinal to stake a championship claim.

In the women's 200-meters, senior Karene King closed her outdoor 200-meter career at Portland State in the first round with a 30th overall placing at 24.57 seconds. With a headwind of 1.8-meters/second, the Tortola, British Virgin Islands native finished fifth in her heat.

King is the Big Sky Conference record holder in the outdoor 200-meters at 23.46 seconds and is also the British Virgin Islands indoor 200-meters record holder at 24.02 seconds. King will return to Portland State for the 2012 indoor season, after competing for her home country, British Virgin Islands, at the Central America and Caribbean games and the IAAF World Championships. She will also attempt to qualify for 2012 Olympics in London this summer with her country's national team.

Junior Joenisha Vinson opened the day for PSU in the 100-meter hurdles. In heat four-of-six of the event, the Phoenix, Ariz., sailed over the first-five hurdles on a mission and was in second-place, within the quarterfinal automatic-qualifying standard. She would go on to finish seventh in the heat and 39th overall with a time of 14.17 seconds. This was Vinson's second-trip to the NCAA West Regional, as she qualified last season as well.

Like Black, Vinson's had a remarkable season. Entering the Big Sky Championship two weeks ago with a Portland State record of 13.83 seconds, Vinson dropped her time to 13.72 in the preliminary round and finished as the Big Sky runnerup in the 100-meter hurdles final with a time of 13.59 seconds. In the heptathlon earlier this season, Vinson also became the first Viking to ever score 1,000 points in an event.

Black, King, Vinson and junior Anaiah Rhodes will close the NCAA West Regional for Portland State tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m., in the 4x100-meters relay. It will be the Vikings last chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa June 8-11.

Each season under Head Coach Ronnye Harrison the Viks have managed to qualify for the NCAA Championships, with sprinter Jernise Saunders qualifying in 2009 and Nick Trubachik qualifying for the decathlon championship last season.
