Getting To Know The Newest Vikings: Volleyball's Leigh-Ann Haataja

This summer and fall, GoViks.com will runs a series of Q&A features with incoming freshmen and transfer student athletes that will be joining the Portland State athletics family in the fall.

Today's feature is on volleyball player Leigh-Ann Haataja, who came to the Park Blocks from Mill Creek, Wash. A 6-foot-1 middle blocker, Haataja led her Jackson High School team to the Washington 4A state title last year, and so far has put up big numbers at the net for the Vikings. Heading into this weekend, Haataja is fourth in the Big Sky in blocks per set (1.10) and eighth in hitting percentage (.237).

GoViks.com: What were the deciding factors in you choosing to attend Portland State?
Leigh-Ann Haatja: I love the coaches, the program and the city.

GoViks.com: What is your first memory of Portland State and why?
LH: My first time in the city was on my unofficial visit touring the campus. I was being clumsy along the way from nervousness.

GoViks.com: What went through your head when the Vikings offered you a scholarship?
LH: I was completely speechless out of excitement. I knew from my first visit that Portland is where I wanted to be, so although I was quiet, all I really wanted to do is scream Yes! in response.

GoViks.com: Are you excited to jump up to the collegiate level? Have you had the chance to watch many collegiate games? And what are the biggest differences you have seen between high school and college?
LH: I've always enjoyed watching college games, it's so much faster and louder. I'm definitely excited to experience that higher level of intensity.

GoViks.com: What did you do to train for your freshman season? Did you play at all over the summer?
LH: I finished up in July with my club team at the national tournament down in Atlanta. I did college prep workouts with a trainer after the high school season ended so I could get stronger and faster to try and keep up with a new tempo.

GoViks.com: What were your feelings the day you signed your National Letter of Intent? What was the experience like for you and your family?
LH: I couldn't have been more excited. I signed the morning right before I got on the bus for the high school state tournament which we went on to win. I had all my teachers, coaches, friends and most of my family there to support me in that moment where I made a huge decision for the next steps of my athletic career, and life.

GoViks.com: What are the strengths you will bring to the team next year?
LH: I have a loud and positive personality on and off the court which helps demonstrate my willingness to lead but also to follow. I hope to be a threat as a middle to support the teammates beside me.

GoViks.com: Have you had a chance to tour Portland much? What are some of your favorite things about the city? Any particular restaurants or sites that have stood out?
LH: I had only been to Portland a couple of times before arriving in August for fall practices, so I didn't know a lot about the city, other than VooDoo donuts :)

GoViks.com: What has been the most influential person in your life and why?
LH: My sister Kristine. She's always been there to support me through all the decisions I've made growing up. She has a strong head on her shoulders and works hard to  succeed in everything she puts her mind to. She has been a huge role model for me.

GoViks.com: What are some of your hobbies and interests?
LH: I spend most my time playing volleyball, but I also love doing yoga, eating out, movies, and outdoor activities.

GoViks.com: What is one thing Portland State fans should know about you?
LH: I never get embarrassed.

GoViks.com: Do you have any nicknames?
LH: My entire Club team called me Wing, including the coaches. It came from Wingleigh, and modified to wingle and wingers. To this day we don't really understand why.

GoViks.com: Who is your favorite professional team and why?
LH: Trailblazers! Cause Seattle's basketball team no longer exists.
