2011-12 Men's Basketball Schedule link
The Portland State men's basketball program has released its 2011-12 schedule, featuring 12 homes games, 16 road games, two neutral site games and an ESPN BracketBuster contest.
The Vikings, under third-year head coach
Tyler Geving, will try to improve on a 14-16 season in 2010-11. PSU overcame numerous injuries to better their record from 2009-10 (13-19). PSU has four returning letterwinners, including two starters, led by second-team All-Big Sky Conference guard
Charles Odum and the league's second-leading rebounder in forward
Chehales Tapscott. PSU also has three redshirts returning.
The Vikings open at the University of Denver on Nov. 11. Non-conference road games also include Wyoming, Louisiana Tech and Maryland-Eastern Shore at the Wyoming Classic; in addition to Oregon, Utah Valley, Oregon State, Cal State Fullerton and Seattle.
PSU will be playing Oregon State for the first time in nine seasons. Meanwhile, the Vikings play the Ducks for the second year in a row, but will see the new Matt Arena in Eugene for the first time. It marks the first time since 2002-03 that PSU has met both Pac-12 schools in the same season, and just the third time in history (also 1996-97 and 1997-98).
Portland State will host an exhibition game with Western Oregon on Nov. 4, but the official home opener is Nov. 15 against Seattle. PSU swept a two-game series with the Redhawks last season.
Other preseason home games include Linfield (Nov. 21), Walla Walla (Dec. 3) and Cal State Bakersfield (Dec. 15).
Big Sky Conference play opens Dec. 28 at Montana. The Vikings will undergo the 16-game league schedule for the final time as the Big Sky will expand by two schools in 2012-13.
PSU's Big Sky home opener is Jan. 5 against Northern Arizona. That begins a key stretch as the Vikings play five of seven conference games at home in January. Five of eight games will be on the road in February.
The Big Sky Conference Tournament begins with quarterfinal round games at home sites on Mar. 3. The semifinals and championship take place at the home of the regular season champion, Mar. 6-7.
Portland State games will be available for a second season on Freedom 970 AM and www.970.am. Tom Hewitt will once again be on the call. The television schedule will be released later this fall.
