Eugene, OR -
A bad start was too much to overcome for the Portland State Vikings as they dropped their first road game of the season, 80-69, to the Oregon Ducks at Matthew Knight Arena.

The Vikings fell behind by 20 midway through the first half, but outscored Oregon by nine the rest of the way.

Early full-court pressure by the Ducks forced Portland State into eight turnovers in the first four minutes. Then Oregon started hitting from outside, making 58% of their first-half shots, including 7-10 three-point field goals.

A 20-4 Oregon run, highlighted by a flurry of three straight three-pointers pumped the Duck lead to 32-12 with nine minutes left in the first half. They maintained that advantage into halftime, leading 51-33 at the break.

"I think we were a little shell shocked from their pressure and quickness," said Viking Coach Tyler Geving. "We didn't handle it very well. We had 10 turnovers in the first nine minutes but after that we settled down. But you can't put yourself in that situation.

"It was a combination of bad shots and turnovers giving them 51 points (in the first half)."

After intermission, the Vikings ground back into it, hitting eight of their first 11 shots and closing the Duck lead to 61-49. A pair of Gary Winston free throws with 7:28 left got the Vikings within nine at 66-57.

But, out of a timeout, EJ Singler hit a three-pointer from the corner and Oregon was back up by 12 and in control the rest of the way.

Artis led three Ducks in double-figures with 16 points and hit four from three-point range. Carlos Emory scored 15 points for Oregon.

Winston Jr. had another solid offensive game, hitting 6-8 field goals and scoring 15 points. Renado Parker also scored 15 points.

The Vikings shot 45% from the field and ended up with only 15 turnovers after all the early mishandles.

Oregon shot 49% and outrebounded the Vikings, 35-24.

Oregon improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Vikings dropped to 1-1.

GAME NOTES: PSU is 2-10 all-time against Oregon… Aaron Moore scored nine points and had a team-high five rebounds for the Vikings… this was the first of four straight road games for the Vikings. Portland State is off until a Nov. 21 game at the University of Portland.
