SEATTLE, Wash. – Individuals from the Portland State men's tennis team found some success in the consolation brackets during the final two days of the PNW Intercollegiate tournament in Seattle, Wash. on Saturday and Sunday, as sophomore
Alec Marx, freshman
Ian Risenhoover and senior
Zach Lubek all advanced to the quarterfinal rounds of their respective tournaments.
In the “Pacific Singles” bracket after falling in the main draw, Marx rebounded nicely, outlasting Flavio Malagutti to the tune of 2-6, 6-4, 10-8. The sophomore advanced to play Tomas Aranguiz in the quarterfinals and forced a third set after falling 3-6 in the first game, winning the second 6-4. In the deciding third frame Marx was defeated 10-6.
Four other Viks took part in the Pacific consolation bracket as
Antoine Bechmann, sophomore
Brent Wheeler and freshman
Lukas Kortus all fell in the consolation tournament. Bechmann dropped a three-set heartbreaker to Hayden Smith 6-2; 2-6; 10-6. Meanwhile, Kortus fell to Tomas Aranguiz, 6-3, 6-3, and Wheeler was upended by Eduardo Martinez, 6-0, 6-4.
In the “Northwest Singles” bracket Lubek and Risenhoover got opening round wins in the consolation tournament defeating Augustus Orlando 6-4, 6-1 and 6-5, 6-0, respectively. In the quarterfinal round Risenhoover matched up with Jackson Martin and fell, 6-4, 6-1. Meanwhile Lubek was paired with Dragos Puscalau and took his opponent to three sets, falling in the first frame, 7-6, taking the second 6-0, but dropping the decisive third, 10-5.

Dillon Triance and freshman
Wil Cochrane also saw action in the Northwest consolation bracket as Triance fell to Kyle Koetje, 6-2, 6-2 while Cochrane was defeated by Matt Oddonnetto, 6-1, 6-2.
The doubles team of Bechmann and Risenhoover tallied a win before the weekend was through, downing a Malgutti and Rapp tandem, 8-4 in the “Northwest Doubles” bracket. The Viking duo was stopped in the next round however, as the team Bots and Kamisar took them down by a score of 8-2.
This tournament served as the final tune-up for the men's tennis team before it prepares for the spring dual season. The men's team will open up in Eugene, Ore., when it takes on the Ducks on Jan. 19, at 10 a.m.
