FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. –
Geronne Black and
Karene King both took down Big Sky Conference records on the final day of the Big Sky Indoor Championship at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz. Black broke the conference record in the women's indoor 60-meter dash and King followed up that performance with a record setting performance in the women's 200-meter dash.
Along with Black and Kings' conference records the quartet of
Dejuanae Toliver,
Joenisha Vinson,
Ashley Frazier and
Dominique Maloney combined for a third place finish in the women's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:46.80 to break the Portland State record for the event.
The Vikings' women's team finished third overall with 90 points. The 90 points is the most since 2007 when the team finished third with 99.5 points.
Black came into the 60-meter dash finals as the favorite and did not disappoint. After nearly breaking the conference record in the preliminaries, Black shattered it in the event finals with a time of 7.36.
“I feel great,” Black said. “That's all. I can't describe it. It's great. I'm happy to get the win for my team, get us some extra points. I knew yesterday that I didn't execute my start, so I watched some video last night and I knew if I executed my start, I'd pull away and that's what I did.”
King also ran a career-best time of 7.49 seconds in the 60-meters to finish second in the event. The Vikings took four of the top-eight spots for the event earning the team 23 points from the one event.
Anaiah Rhodes finished fifth with a persona-best time of 7.62 while
Sierra Brooks finished eighth with a time of 7.77.
Vinson, fresh off her second place finish in the women's pentathlon on Friday, finished second in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.56.
P'Lar Dorsett finished fourth with a time of 8.62 while
Cassandra Sidner finished fifth with a personal-best time of 8.62.
King followed up her career-best time in the 60-meters with a conference record setting time of 23.77 in the women's 200-meters beating the previous record of 23.82 set by Joyce Rainwater of Eastern Washington in 1995. Black finished fourth in the event with a personal-best time of 24.62.
“I feel great,” King said following her record setting performance. “I feel honored. This is my last indoor meet and I don't have an outdoor season, so this is my last Big Sky meet and I feel honored to represent Portland State. This track has some tight corners, which made the race tough, but once I hit the straightaway, it was time to go.”
Amber Rozcicha earned the Vikings four team points with a fifth place finish in the women's mile run. She finished with a time of 5:11.78.
Montaisha Moore jumped a career-best distance of 39-10.75 (12.16m) in the women's triple jump to finish fourth in the event to add five team points.
On the men's side, Sean Mackelvie finished fourth overall in the men's triple jump with a career-best distance of 45-10.75 (13.99m) to earn the men's team five points.
