PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State track & field teams head to Sacramento, Calif. for the MONDO Mid-Major Challenge this Thursday-Saturday, April 12-14 hosted by Sacramento State at Hornet Stadium.
MEET INFORMATION:
The men's decathlon and women's heptathlon events will begin on Thursday with five and four events respectively and then continue on Friday. The rest of the men and women's open track & field events will begin Friday and continue on Saturday.
LAST YEAR AT MONDO INVITATIONAL:
The Vikings have historically done well at the invitational and last year was no exception with the women's 4x400-meter relay team breaking the Portland State record and the women's 4x100-meter relay team setting the meet record. The women's 4x100 relay team shattered its previous 2011 season-best time of 45.92 seconds, by recording a meet record of 45.24 seconds, winning the event by a margin of .40 seconds.
On the men's side, Sean Mackelvie won the javelin competition at the meet with a throw of 221-04, a career-best throw by over 20 feet.
LAST TIME OUT:
The women's 4x100-meter relay team set the Charles Bowles Track record at the Willamette Invitational, as did three individuals in the women's 100-meter dash.
P'Lar Dorsett,
Sierra Brooks,
Anaiah Rhodes and
Geronne Black teamed up to take down the track record in the women's 4x100-meter relay with a time of 46.99. The time is shy of the squads season best time of 46.47 set at the Oregon Preview, but it breaks the previous track record of 47.05 set in 2007.
Black continued her track breaking ways in the women's 100-meter dash as she set the track record with a first-place finish and a time of 11.67, which is a season best time but shy of her career-best of 11.65.
On the men's side, Mackelvie competed for the first time this spring in the men's long jump and posted a team best distance of 20-09.25 (6.33m).
Jake Ovgard finished second in the men's 100-meter dash with a career-best time of 10.90 to qualify for the Big Sky Championship. His time also ties him for 10th all-time at Portland State for the event.
