Vikings Square-Off with Lumberjacks in Season Finale

Vikings Square-Off with Lumberjacks in Season Finale

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State men's tennis team concludes its 2012 campaign this Saturday when it hosts the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona at 1 p.m. PDT at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.

The dual will run simultaneously with the Portland State women's tennis dual with Northern Arizona. It is the only time this season that the men and women's tennis teams will be on the court at the same time.

The Vikings (2-16 overall, 0-7 Big Sky Conference) are returning home following a three-match road trip through Reno, Nev. and Sacramento, Calif. where they dropped non-conference duals to New Mexico State and Nevada and a conference dual with Sacramento State, all by scores of 7-0.

The Vikings are looking for their first conference win this weekend in their final opportunity of the season. The Lumberjacks come into the final weekend of the season at 4-16 overall with a lone Big Sky win over Northern Colorado on Feb. 11. They beat the Bears by a score of 5-2.

Robin Pessutto has been the No. 1 singles player for the Lumberjacks and has amassed a record of 4-16. Ethan Vaughn has the best singles record on the team at 14-2 and is 14-0 at the No. 5 singles line and has won his last 10 straight singles matches.

The Lumberjacks are 39-for-81 (.325) in singles play this season and 21-for-36 (.368) in doubles play. They have had 11 different doubles duos take to the courts this season, which is second most in conference this season to the Vikings 12 different doubles duos.

A victory for the Vikings on Saturday would make a tough season a little better heading into the offseason.
