SACRAMENTO, Calif. –
Geronne Black broke the school record in the women's 100-meter dash while
John Lawrence and the women's 4x100-meter relay team won on a career final day of the MONDO Mid-Major Challenge in Sacramento, Calif. Saturday.
Black posted the fastest time in Portland State history Saturday in the women's 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 11.58 which breakes Karene Kings previous record by 0.01 which she set in 2011. Black now holds the outdoor 100-meter school record and the indoor 60-meter school and Big Sky Conference Record..
The women's 4x100-meter relay team of
Sierra Brooks, Black,
Anaiah Rhodes and
Jazmin Ratcliff ran the second fastest time in Portland State history, 45.44, to win the event and start the day off on the firth foot for the Vikings.
Five other sprinters set personal best in the event and either improved their Big Sky Conference Championship qualifying time or qualified for the first time on Saturday. Brookes moved into eight all-time with a time of 11.92 with Rhodes moving into ninth all-time with a time of 11.98.
P'Lar Dorsett, Ratcliff and
Cassandra Sidner all qualified for the championship.
The women's sprint team continued to have a career day with Sidner, Dorsett and
Montaisha Moore all posting Portland State top 10 times in the 100-meter hurdles. Sidner moved into third all-time with a time of 14.13 while Dorsett moved to sixth all-time and Moore tied her preview best at 10th all-time with times of 14.45 and 15.94 respectively.
Dominique Maloney moved to second all-time at Portland State in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 56.41 while in the men's 400-meter dash
Chris Fasching set a season-best time of 53.01 and
Mark Bozarth-Dreher set a personal-best time of 54.18.
In the women's 200-meter dash four sprinters either improved their Big Sky qualifying time or set a qualifying time. Brooks set a qualifying time of 24.67 while Black improved on her qualifying time with a mark of 24.73. Ratcliff and Rhodes also qualified with times of 25.10 and 25.19 respectively.
Dejuanae Toliver rand a personal-best time of 25.40 but just fell short of qualifying.
Ashley Frazier ran a personal-best time of 1:01.52 to improve on her Big Sky qualifying mark.
In the men's 200-meter dash,
Jake Ovgard set a personal-best time of 21.98 to qualify for the championship.
Jordan Bird and
Chris Fasching also set persona-best times of 23.16 and 23.45 respectively. Bird set a season best in the men's 100-meter dash with a time of 11.53 earlier in the day.
Earlier in the day, Lawrence then won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season best time of 9:19.71 while
Cary Dunagan and
Jake Schwartz ran the race for the first time this season and posted times of 10:02.19 and 10:45.14 respectively.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Toliver, Rhodes, Frazier and Maloney recorded the fourth fastest time in Portland State history with a time of 3:48.94 to finish fourth.
Not only did the Vikings make strides on the track but they improved in field events as well. Moore qualified for the women's triple jump with a personal-best distance of 37-08.75 (11.50m). Sean Mackelvie set a season best in the men's triple jump with a distance of 45-01.50 (13.75m).
Hanna Johnson set a personal best in the women's javelin with a throw of 124-11 (38.07m) while Mackelvie set a season best in the men's javelin with a throw of 202-11 (61.59m).
Senior
Jaret Rockenbach set a personal best in the hammer throw and a season best in the shot put with distances of 141-06 (43.14m) and 47-04.50 (14.44m) respectively.
The Vikings will now travel to the Oregon Relays, April 20-21, at Historic Heyward Field in Eugene, Ore. for their second to last outdoor track meet before the Big Sky Outdoor Championship May 9-12 in Bozeman, Mont.
