FOREST GROVE, Ore.
– Sean Mackelvie improved on his Big Sky Conference leading distance in the men's javelin while Sarah Hanchett ran one of the fastest times in the Big Sky this season in the women's 1,500-meters in the first day of the Pacific Twilight in Forest Grove, Ore.
 
Hanchett finished second overall in the 1,500-meters with a personal-best time of 4:31.51 which is the fastest on the team this season and top 10 in the conference. Her time also puts her fourth all-time at Portland State for the event. Brittany Castillo, running in the event for the first time this season, ran a time of 5:07.34.
                               
Castillo's twin sister Brandy Castillo ran a time of 18:03.28 in the women's 5,000-meters while teammate Brittany Long posted a personal-best time of 11:55.39.
 
Ali Super, competing unattached, won the women's javelin with a throw of 141-11 (43.26m) while Allison Burkett finished third overall with a distance of 122-01 (37.21m) and Mandy Kiefer finished fourth with a throw of 118-09 (36.20m).
 
On the men's side, Mackelvie improved on his Big Sky best distance in the javelin with a season best throw of 218-02 (66.49m).
 
Spencer Moe finished 14th overall in the men's hammer throw with a distance of 144-01 (42.92m) and Jaret Rockenbach finished 17th overall with a throw of 134-07 (41.02m).
 
Cary Dunagan ran a personal-best time of 9:42.65 in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase to finish third in the event. His time puts him eighth all-time at Portland State. Jake Schwartz ran a personal best in the event with a time of 10:335.84.
 
Zach Carpenter ran the men's 1,500-meters for the first time this season and posted a time of 4:13.97 while Max Zemtsov posted a personal-best time of 4:15.35 in the event.
 
The Vikings will continue competition at the Pacific Twilight on Saturday while Geronne Black competes in the women's 100-meter dash at the Brutus Hamilton Open/Invitational and former Viking Karene King will run the 4x100-meter relay for the British Virgin Islands at the Penn Relays.
