BERKELEY, Calif./FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Junior sprinter
Geronne Black broke the Portland State and Big Sky Conference all-time record for the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 11.52, Saturday afternoon in the event finals of the Brutus Hamilton Open/Invitational in Berkeley, Calif.
Black began the day by running a time of 11.61 in the event prelims, which was 0.03 second off her previous school record of 11.58, which she set two weeks ago at the Sacramento State MONDO Mid-Major Challenge.
Black then broke the school record for the second time this season, this time also breaking the Big Sky record with the time of 11.52 in the event finals. She finished second overall in the finals to Stanford's Shataya Hendricks. Black's time puts her 34th overall in the country and 14th in the West Region.
Black broke Joyce Rainwater of Eastern Washington's time of 11.55 in the outdoor 100-meters, which has been standing since 1995. Black now holds the Portland State and Big Sky all-time records in the women's indoor 60-meter dash and the women's outdoor 100-meter dash, both set this year.
Elsewhere, the Vikings had a group of competitors finishing up at the Pacific Twilight in Forest Grove. Sean Mackelvie posted a season best in the javelin while Sarah Hanchett ran a personal best time in the women's 1,500-meters to highlight the Vikings' action on Friday night.
Hanchett put together another big day as she won the women's 800-meters in a personal-best time of 2:12.08 which places her fifth all-time at Portland State for the event. Her time also qualifies her for the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in the event. She previously qualified for the 1,500-meters.
Erica Contos ran the event for the first time and posted a time of 2:28.13 to finish third in her heat.
Senior thrower
Jaret Rockenbach also moved into the Portland State outdoor top-10 list for the men's shot put with a distance of 49-00.75 (14.95m). He also posted a distance of 118-07 (36.15m) in the discus throw.
Shae Carson finished seventh overall in the women's discus with a distance of 127-09 (38.95m).
Jacob Lehman jumped a season-best distance of 20-02.25 (6.15m) in the men's long jump to finish eighth overall in the event.
Mark Bozarth-Dreher ran the men's 100-meter dash for the first time in his career and posted a time of 12.60. He also ran a personal-best time of 18.29 in the men's 110-meter hurdles.
Mandy Keifer ran the women's 200-meter for the first time and finished ninth in her heat with a time of 27.97. She also finished second overall in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.58.
Former Vikings
Karene King ran in the women's 4x100-meter relay at the Penn Relays Saturday representing the British Virgin Islands. She ran the third leg of the relay, which finished in seventh with a time 44.87.
The Vikings will next head to the Oregon Twilight on May 5 at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. before preparing for the Big Sky Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 9-12 in Bozeman, Mont.
