Portland, Ore. - Five Vikings will head this week to the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field West Prelims hosted by the University of Texas in Austin, Texas May 24-26. Junior Geronne Black will compete in the women's 100-meter dash and then team up with Sierra Brooks, Anaiah Rhodes and Jazmin Ratcliff in the women's 4x100-meter relay. Sean Mackelvie will compete in the javelin throw on the men's side.
 
Mackelvie will lead things off for the Vikings at the West Prelims in the men's javelin National Semifinal. The three-heat event is slated to start on Thursday, May 24 at 9 a.m. PDT. The top 16 distances will advance to a three-attempt final, which will determine the top 12 who will advance to the National Final on Thursday, June 7 in Des Moines Iowa.
 
Mackelvie comes into the National Semifinal with the 17th-best accepted entry distance with a throw of 221-10 (67.61m) to take home the event title at the 2012 Big Sky Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
 
Black will run in the women's 100-meter dash on Thursday, May 24, which is slated to begin at 4:55 p.m. PDT. She comes into the event after posting the 19th fastest accepted entry in the region this season. She broke the Portland State and Big Sky Conference's all-time record for the event on April 28 at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. with at time of 11.52.
 
Black then went on to win the 2012 Big Sky Outdoor Track & Field Championship in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.66 to claim the individual title, the second of her career. She also won the event in 2010.
 
Black will be in the fifth of the six heats in the first round of the 100-meter dash at the West Prelims. The top three from each heat along with the nine next fastest times will advance to the national quarterfinals on Friday at 4:45. The quarterfinals will be split into three heats with the top three in each along with the three next fastest advancing to the national semifinals on Wednesday, June 6 in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
Brooks, Black, Rhodes and Ratcliff will take to the track on Saturday at the West Prelims in the women's 4x100-meter relay in the national quarterfinal which is scheduled to start at 4:15. The Vikings will be in the second of the three quarterfinal heats with the top three teams from each heat along with the three next fastest teams advancing to the National Semifinal in Des Moines.
 
The four sprinters broke the Portland State all-time record as well as the Big Sky Outdoor Championship record for the event with a time of 45.19, which moved them into the top 24 in the regional to qualify for the West Prelims.
