Geronne Black ran a new Portland State and Big Sky Conference all-time record time of 11.39 Thursday in the first round of the women's 100-meter dash at the NCAA West Prelims in Austin, Texas.
Black, a native of Brooklyn N. Y., obliterated her previous record of 11.52 to finish third in her heat and 13th overall for the event. By finishing in the top three in her heat, she advances to the national quarterfinal at the West Prelims on Friday with heats slated to start at 4:45 p.m. PDT.
The top three in each heat as well as the next nine fastest runners advanced to the quarterfinals which will be run on Friday in three heats. The top three in each of the semifinal heats along with the next three fastest will advance out of the West Prelims to the national semifinals in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday, June 6.
Sean MacKelvie advanced to the NCAA Finals in the men's javelin throw with a Portland State record distance of 228-03 (69.57M) to finish ninth overall. The women's 4x100-meter relay team will run on Saturday at 4 p.m.
