MacKelvie Injured in Warm-Ups, Unable to Compete at NCAAs

DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior thrower Sean MacKelvie did not compete Thursday at the 2012 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championship in Des Moines, Iowa in the men's javelin throw after suffering an elbow injury during warm-ups.

“It was a game-time decision that Coach (Seth) Henson and I made,” head track and field coach Ronnye Harrison said from Des Moines. “We didn't want to risk anything. He has a fifth year and we didn't want to risk it. He'll be right back here next year.”

MacKelvie, the Portland State all-time record holder for the event, hurt the elbow on his first full warm-up throw prior to competition Thursday. He set the school record at the NCAA West Regional in Austin, Texas last month with a distance of 228-03 (69.57m) to finish ninth overall at the regional.

MacKelvie will return as a fifth-year senior for the 2012-13 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
