SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior
Courtney VanBrocklin scored her 1,000th-career point but it was not enough as the Portland State women's basketball team fell 81-77 to Sacramento State Thursday night at The Nest in Sacramento, Calif.
VanBrocklin recorded her second double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Her 14 points gives her 1,004 points in her Portland State career. She became the 16th member of PSU's 1,000-point club. The last Viking to hit 1,000 career points was
Eryn Jones last year.
Junior forward
Angela Misa paced the Vikings with 20 points and 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.
Karley Lampman scored a season-high 12 points while
Allison Greene scored 11.
Keaton McFadden scored 10 points in 11 first-half minutes while pulling down seven rebounds. Portland State had five players in double-figure scoring for the first time this season.
Portland State (7-7 overall, 1-4 Big Sky Conference) dominated early in the first half and built an 11-point lead at 19-8 and again at 21-10 with 12:06 left in the first half.
Sacramento State (7-6, 2-2) started chipping away at the Vikings lead and took their first lead of the game at 30-29 on a Natasha Torgenson three-pointer. Torgenson hit another three to put the Hornets up four with just over five minutes remaining in the half.
Torgenson's second three was her 11th point in just over a two minute span to give the Hornets the lead. She ended the game with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting including a trio of three-pointers.
PSU took back the lead and went up by five-points with under a minute to play in the half. The hornets cut the lead to three with a Fantasia Hilliard layup. The Vikings had the ball with the shot clock turned off but a couple of ill-advised three-point attempts gave the Hornets the ball back and they hit a layup with six seconds on the clock to take a 42-41 lead at the half.
Misa scored eight points in six minutes but two early fouls had her sitting on the bench for most of the first half. McFadden played 11 minutes in the first half in place of Misa and made it count recording 10 points (5-for-6 FG) and seven rebounds.
Sacramento State came out in the second half and built a 10-point lead with just over 11 minutes left in the game. The Vikings started to cut into the Hornets lead thanks to Misa's 12 second half points. VanBrocklin also came alive in the second half with eight of her 14 points.
The Vikings tied the game at 67-67 with 6:21 remaining. Sacramento State built up a five-point lead again with 1:52 left. A Greene layup cut it to three points. A pair of Misa free throws cut the lead to just a point.
After a Hornets layup, freshman guard
Emily Easom again cut the lead to a single point with 21 seconds left. The clock did not help the Vikings who were forced to foul. Alle Moreno hit one of two free throws but the Vikings could not get the rebound and were forced to foul again. Torgerson hit a pair of free throws to secure the 81-77 win for the Hornets.
Portland State held the rebounding advantage 55-to-46 and outscored Sacramento State 48-to-38. The Hornets forced 21 turnovers recording 18 steals.
The Vikings, who normally hold their opponents to a low shooting percentage from three-point range, allowed a season-high seven threes.
Portland State now travels to Northern Arizona on Saturday for a 5:35 p.m. PST showdown with the Lumberjacks. NAU defeated Eastern Washington 83-68 Thursday night to improve to 3-10 overall and 2-2 in Big Sky Play.
