ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Less than 24 hours after the Portland State women's track and field team saw one of its school records fall on day one of the Cherry and Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., they saw two more follow suit. Seniors
Geronne Black and
Joenisha Vinson set the new Portland State standards in both the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdle events, respectively, on Saturday.
Black, who just last year set the Big Sky and Portland State records in the 60m, didn't wait long to improve upon that time in 2013, running the event with a finals time of 7.34 and taking first place. In that same event Portland State placed two more of its runners in the finals, as
Anaiah Rhodes took fourth and tallied her new personal best with a time of 7.60, while
Sierra Brooks finished close behind with a mark of 7.62 and a fifth-place finish.
Meanwhile Vinson etched her name in the Portland State record book as well, one event later, besting former Viking,
P'Lar Dorsett as the senior recorded a finals time of 8.46, .04 seconds better than Dorsett's mark. Vinson took second overall in the event. Senior
Cassandra Sidner excelled in the 60-meter hurdles as well as she recorded the program's third-best time with a mark of 8.59 and a fifth-place finish.
The success kept on coming for PSU in the 200-meter event as Brooks and Rhodes both qualified for the Big Sky Championship as they finished 14th and 15th with times of 25.09 and 25.14, respectively. Rhodes' time marks a new personal best.
In the 400-meter event,
Dominique Maloney, who broke a school mark and qualified for the Big Sky Meet yesterday, wound up finishing fifth with her time of 55.72, while
Ashley Frazier tallied a 17th-place finish with a time of 58.02, a new personal record.
Highlighting the field events for the PSU women's team,
Hanna Johnson narrowly missed setting a school record in the shot put with her distance of 14.12 (46-04.00), a new personal best and the second-farthest distance in school history.
On the men's side it was
Sean MacKelvie in the field events that highlighted the meet's second day. MacKelvie registered a Big Sky Championship qualifying jump of 13.96m (45-09.75) in the triple jump while posting a mark of 6.45 meters (21-02.00) in the long jump.
J.J. Rosenberg, who finished the first day of the meet in first-place in the 400m, ended the meet in eighth-place with a mark of 49.28. Rosenberg also tallied PSU's best meet time of 22.25 in the 200m, good for an 11th-place finish.
Jake Ovgard also competed this weekend finishing 23rd in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.16 as well as 25th in the 200m with a mark of 23.32.
Portland State will head back to Seattle, Wash., next weekend for the UW Invitational, which is scheduled for Jan. 25-26. Start times are slated for 3 p.m. and 12 p.m. for Friday and Saturday, respectively.
