Portland State Track and Field Completes Second Day of the Big Sky Indoor Championships As More Records Fall

BOZEMAN, Mont. – After a successful first day of the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships which saw Joenisha Vinson win the pentathlon and break her own school record, the senior continued her strong effort, scoring another six points in the long jump to give the Viks 16 points through two days in Bozeman, Mont. Meanwhile the Viks saw several records broken as the team set itself up nicely to score points in the meet's final day.

In one of the first events of the day Vinson got the Viks on the board with more points, tallying a mark of 5.80-meters (19-00.50), tallying a third-place finish, good for six points to the team score. Sierra Brooks also placed in the top-10 for the Viks, registering a distance of 5.52 (18-01.50) and just missed out on scoring points.

A trio of Viks qualified for the finals of the 55-meter hurdle event as Vinson once again was the top-placing Viking runner, coming in fourth with a time 7.93 seconds. Cassandra Sidner followed close behind with a time of 7.99. Jazmin Ratcliff was the final PSU entrant to qualify for the 55m-hurdle event clocking in with a time of 8.11 and an eighth-place finish.

Senior Geronne Black continued to impress in the 55m, clocking in with a time of 6.91 and taking first in the event. Rhodes and Brooks also qualified for the 55m finals, with times of 7.09 each.

Dominique Maloney set the new Portland State standard in the 400-meter dash, recording a time of 55.83, breaking her previous best of 56.90 set this season.

The Viks sent three more runners to the finals in the 200-meter event as Maloney looked impressive again with a mark of 24.51 for a third place finish. Meanwhile Rhodes and Black came in close behind with times of 25.21 and 25.38, respectively.

On the men's side J.J. Rosenberg tied the PSU 400m record set by Mitch Whalen back in 2005, recording an identical time of 48.78, qualifying for the finals tomorrow.

Meanwhile Rockwell Tufty highlighted the field events as the freshman, finished in 10th in the high jump with a mark of 1.95m (6-04.75).

The Portland State women's team currently sits in eighth place with 16 points while Idaho State is currently No. 1 on the women's side with 40 points. The men's squad has yet to tally a team point in this meet and trail No. 1, Montana State, which currently has 55.
