UPDATE: Viking Football Adds 21 Student-Athletes In 2013 Signing Class

For more on the signees, go to 2013 Viking Football Signing Day Central

Portland State football coach Nigel Burton has announced the signing of 21 student-athletes in his 2013 National Letter of Intent class.

Once again, Burton is thrilled with the quality his staff recruited across positions and the local flavor that the signing class brings. Fifteen of the 21 signees are high schoolers, four are junior college transfers and two are four-year transfers.

The Viking staff sought players with talent and excellent pedigree as well. “We put emphasis on getting kids from programs that win a lot of football games and know how to win,” said Burton. “Whether it was Jesuit or Mater Dei or Federal Way or Long Beach Poly or Marist or Camas or Lynden... those guys know how to win, what it takes to win, the sacrifices made and have the confidence to finish a game.”

Among the 15 high schools signees, eight are from the state of Oregon, four are from Washington and three are from California.

Said Burton: “I think we knocked it out of the park at the offensive line position once again, and with wanting to get bigger and more physical on the defensive line.

“We signed a lot of guys with speed that are great pass rushers, but we wanted to get more physical with run defense as well.”

All five offensive linemen are Oregonians, including Chad Bach (Mountain View HS), Ryan Brown (Jesuit HS), Justin Outslay (Salem Academy), Austin Powell (Crescent Valley HS) and Alex Sirois (sir-ROY) (Century HS).

On the defensive line, Burton picked up a pair of athletic ends in Davond Dade (Los Angeles Crespi Carmelite HS) and Desmoun Thompson (Kennedy Catholic (WA) HS). At tackle, JC transfer Daniel Fusi (FOO-see) (Riverside CC) brings great size (6-0, 340) as does Bryon Bodon (6-5, 290) from Crescent Valley HS.

“We like what we did at linebacker where guys can come in and make immediate impacts,” said Burton, who lost two talented starters to graduation; All-American Ian Sluss and middle linebacker Khalil Bass

John Norcross from Camas (WA) High School, and two JC additions, Jake Woolley and Jeremy Lutali (who signed during the early JC signing period in December) should bolster the linebacker spot.

“At the skill position areas we really put a premium on speed,” said Burton.

Those speedsters include wide receiver Austin Baird (Marist HS) and a host of defensive backs. They are Xavier Coleman (Jesuit HS), Kahlil Dawson (Graham-Kapowkin (WA) HS) and JC Genova (Mater Dei (CA) HS).

Burton was thrilled to add running back Nate tago (TONG-oh) from Tesoro (CA) HS, the top running back on the Vikings' recruiting list. Burton likened Tago running style to that of current Viking  and leading rusher DJ Adams.

Portland State also signed quarterback Josh Kraght (KRAFT) (Lynden (WA) HS), whom Burton likens to a young Connor Kavanaugh. Boise State transfer Hayden Plinke (PLINK-ee) signed an aid agreement on Wednesday afternoon to be the 21st addition. Originally from Hillsboro's Glencoe High School, he played as a freshman for the Broncos. Tight end Tyson Heller (Santa Barbara JC) joins Plinke as the Vikings try to fill a position that lost its top two players to graduation.

Also signing an aid agreement as a four-year transfer is punter/kicker Marcus Kinsella, an Australian who spent one year as a redshirt at Indiana. Kinsella can both punt and kick and comes from the same kicking academy as former Viking punter Thomas Duyndam.
